We bought a cabin Spring 2005 (needed investment opportunity and tax break) and have spent 3 fantastic summers on the Lake! Yes, the Lake with the low water level. We have been affected by the low Lake water as everyone else.. For example, we purchased a new boat last fall, put it in storage for the winter and this past spring installed a boat lift for it. Well, the boat is still in storage and the lift is high and dry and never been used.
So what! We have had our best times on the Lake. Yes, the Lake with the low water level. Our 3 teenagers, 2 in college, one on the way to Auburn next fall, always want to be on the Lake with us! Every weekend! They bring their friends. On average, we have 6 - 8 kids every weekend, sometimes as many as 15. We play on what water there is, hang out at the cabin, talk for hours.... about life. Even in the heart of winter when water sport is not much fun, the kids want to go to the Lake. With this we have been blessed with deeper bonds than most families.
Some of the most awesome people we have met are at the Lake. And we have traveled around the world and have met many awesome people. The Lake has fantastic neighbors always ready to help one another with no expectations of reward. As one quoted, "that's just what neighbors do."
The Lake has provided a peace and calm in one of the worst times in my life. I have sat on the deck of the cabin and looked out over the water and felt its peace surround me. I know Mom shares this peace with me, even from heaven. My only regret at the Lake is Mom didn't get to sit on the deck with us and enjoy the beauty and blessings it has before God called her home.
We LOVE the Lake! Even as low as the water currently is. You see, it is not about water activities, etc. The Lake represents wonderful memories, future hopes and dreams. We dream of our future years and hope they are all at the Lake - til the end!
So, when everyone sits around and discusses property values, this is the TRUE value. Even if the monetary value of the property goes to 0, it will always be the most valuable place I know... next to heaven!

Wow. You have what I wished for but didn't get...not in the magnitude you all have anyway. There's no better place...even when I'm by myself whether there's water or not. Good luck in all that you do.

Your situation sounds identical to mine. We bought our place when we had 3 kids in Auburn and what memories we have of those times. There were times when all three of my kids brought friends and we had as many as 18 kids in the house. It seemed like all I did was cook and put gas in the boat but, I wouldn't trade those times for anything and the low water hasn't affected my appreciation of the Lake 1 iota. As a matter of fact, I have thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet.

This is why we bought at the lake. I grew up on a lake as a kid, I have two boy under 10 and i wait to share this lake with my family....

Cant wait until I can get out of Atlanta and spend more time at the lake. Its funny how when at our primary home we deal with the everyday challenges with teenage boys. But when we go to the lake, the natural tension goes away and we all our content on the water.

Thanks for putting in to words what most of us feel! High, low, wet, dry...we love being here. Lake Martin is all about making memories - and they're all pretty good ones!

Thing is, me and my family has had similar great times with our boat at the marina... I understand the value and benefits of being around/on the water. I put as much or more $ into my little piece of heaven as some land owners, but I will not have the rate of return. Mine return is mostly enjoyment which in itself makes is worthwhile.

Dirt Diva, I totally agree. We have had our home for 3 summers as well, and as we all know the water levels have made boating a challenge, but we still love every day of it! The wonderful people (most) on the lake make it worthwhile also. When you drive down the street, how many people wave at you and smile as you drive by? None, I bet. The lake is such a beautiful place to me in winter and summer. Some of our best memories have taken place at the lake in the winter as well. So glad there are others out there that just like the lake for what it is. A big bunch of water!

The year was 1958 or maybe 59 and I was only twelve when my Dad, and his best friend decided to look for a lake lot. They put in a canoe and off they paddled along the clear still waters of our beautiful Lake Martin. At the end of the day they each picked out a lot of their choice. There was not even a road to our lot. My Dad, Mother, older brother and grandmother would hike every weekend thru the woods to our little bit of heaven on earth. As time passed by we would build and add to our little cabin as well as add to the memories of my childhood. As I look back I can see my mother yelling for me to come help her as she sat on a eight pound large mouth bass which she had just caught and drug up to the bank. We mounted it and it still hangs on our wall. My Mom, and Dad are gone now but every time I sit on our porch and look out over the same beautiful water where my children and their children now play I get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye thinking about what this place means to me and my family. When you talk about value how do you put a price on what those things mean. A day will come someday when it is time to leave this place but at this time in my life no amount of money in the world could tempt me to leave this lake water or no water. I am sure that I speak for many others on this issue.

Ditto!! You have summed up beautifully "Life on the Lake." I'll never forget the 4th of July we had 15 young adults at our house for a "long" weekend. We haven't forgotten nor have they! Memories/family/friends are what the lake is all about.

Wonderful post. The same can be said from the PP family about our boat. There is nothing like the lake. Whether you are a home owner or a boat owner. The joys that we find from spending the weekend on our boat is unmatched. The memories we are building with our family will never be erased and will live in the minds of our children forever. Back when everyone on the board were arguing over the boat ban this is what the PP family were trying to express. Our boat being outlawed, would not just be a set back in the fact that we would have to sell or move our boat. We would loose the memories and future memories that we had of pier pressure and our family on Lake Martin. Lucky for us Pier Pressure was grandfathered and we still have our little weekend retreat and are still able to spend the quality time with our children.
