A growing number of citizens in Tallapoosa County are becoming
increasingly concerned over the level of both long term and short
term debt that the County Commission has committed to recently -- over
the past 8 years, the level of long term debt for Tallapoosa County has
gone up threefold, making it the highest debt, per capita, of all
Alabama's sixty-seven counties.
Given the recent commitment to additional short term debt, necessitated just to cover normal operations of the County, it is difficult to see how the Commission can continue its current spending commitments without reducing services, eliminating jobs and/or raising taxes. Usable information on the Commission's income projections and expenditure plans, their commitments and their decision-making processes are very difficult to obtain.
Documentation of meetings, which are supposed to conform to the requirements of Alabama's Open Meetings Act, have been delayed as much as six months and when they are published, they suggest that commitments of millions of dollars of debt are made with little or no discussion.
A Steering Committee has been formed to help organize and direct
the efforts of concerned citizens in advocating more fiscally
responsible and open government in Tallapoosa County. With financial support from a small group of citizens, the CGG Steering Committee successfully challenged the recent lawsuit which was filed under the sponsorship of the County Commission, against the citizens and taxpayers of Tallapoosa County. If successful, the lawsuit would have effectively eliminated any limit on long term debt that could be incurred by the County Commission. This message invites all of you, your spouse and friends, to participate in a general meeting of those interested in the Citizens for Good Government (CGG). The meeting will be held next Monday *February 11* at *7:00 PM* in the large downstairs meeting room in the StillWaters Residential Association (SWRA) Administration Building on StillWaters Drive. Please plan to participate and invite your friends and anyone that might be interested in the operations of the Tallapoosa County Commission and the financial condition of the county. There are two Microsoft Word attachments to this e-mail message. One depicts the agenda and the other is a flyer that highlights some very important information concerning the necessity of CGG and how you can help.

OK, only one out of the six CGG steering committee members 'are from around here'. Nevertheless, this is very important for those of us who care about the future of this county---and our children and grandchildren who may be here to deal with the legacy of this Commission.

After enduring a 3x rise in my property taxes over the past 5 years while seeing zero improvement in services, I'm curious as to where all the money T.County receives, goes. I plan to attend.

I hope it works out well for you folks. It certainly sounds like there is a problem, and there seems to be smoke signals.
Your County sounds like a microcosm of what is going on at the National level in our Country. Spending is skyrocketing and the National Deficit is finding new solar systems.
