I'm no businessman but a thought occurred to me that I'll throw out in case there are any smart corporate finance types reading this. If the Development commission is created, with RL on the board, doesn't that instantly make RL a much more valuable company, and thus more likely to be taken over/bought out by a bigger out-of-state company? I mean, in other parts of the country there are companies that don't just develop subdivisions, they develop entire towns. Wouldn't the ability to develop one of the finest lakes while also having a seat on the zoning board be unique and highly desirable? I realize RL is privately held but everyone has a price.

While I believe Russell has been very good for Lake Martin, having a seat on a planning and zoning commission theoretically would do no good since that board member would have to recuse on his company's projects before the board. This will have to be some form of quasi-governmental entity so I would assume state ethics rules will apply.

I say theoretically because the back scratch phenomenon will be in full force on this commission so that the illusion of propriety will be maintained.

That said, I have not read the proposed bill, but a board with these sweeping powers could be very overbearing in the future. Think about having a New England style Hysterical Society, oops, Historical Society governing all aspects of a remodel.

This is what I "heard" so not sure if it has any truth to it and may not even be possible but ....
I was told that by re-zoning the county it would allow RL to receive a government grant in the building of "old town".
Maybe something to look into?
