To follow up on earlier posts:: My boat is 22', open deck, over 50 HP, but was never equipped with Kill Switch. Am I required to have one installed???

Yes you have to have a kill switch. Here's a direct quote from the link the earlier poster supplied
"Boats less than 24 feet in length, with an open cockpit and powered by more than 50 horsepower, must be equipped with an ignition safety switch with the lanyard attached to the person, clothing or PFD of the operator."

responded to that scenario because I have a buddy with a 17 ft. bass boat that was going to come and I told him there was a crack down on wearing the kill switch. He told me his boat does not have one. Question......is there a grandfather situation in place for boats that were manufactured in the 80's and did not come with one?

several years ago (like a decade or more) got a ticket on a routine check for not having a kill switch. the boat did not come with one, and my husband and I were young and dumb! the ticket was over $150.00 way back then. My husband installed one before our next outing!

Just run the coil wire through your belt loop. Instant kill switch... Don't get wet, though. lol

Wow, I guess I never really read that part of the marine laws as close as I should have. Having a relic ('92) of a boat I had always just assumed that if it was required it would have been installed by now. Once again the forum has saved me from a ticket. Kudos to the smarter folks than I that populate this place. On a side note, thank you to the Marine Police that patrol the lake. As much as people complain about the spot checks and tickets that are issued the lake is a much safer place thanks to them. As far as I am concerned they deserve a round of applause every time they bust a BUI at the lake.
