Over the weekend, at least two owners in our condo at Stillwaters had gas stolen from their pontoon boats (siphoned out of built in tank) while in their slips. Does the Marine Police do anything to help with this growing problem? They certainly have a presence on the lake doing things like checking for expired fire extinguishers (who is going to stay onboard putting out a 24 gallon gasoline tank fire with a 2 pound extinguisher), but what are they doing to prevent stealing of $100 worth of gas at a time from boat owners? The thefts are happening most likely from another boat pulling up to the dock, so it would be a crime committed on the water.

Perhaps some security cameras would help?

or a locking gas cap?

I'd rather the MP spend their time ticketing safety violations (reckless driving, BUI and other violations that endanger others) than catching thieves. Not that gas theft isn't a bad thing but you can do something to try and prevent it.

Does Stillwaters have any security at their dock? Marine police can't be everywhere.

Maybe a good idea but one word of caution. My Dad ran a drilling company and they had a problem with gas and diesel thefts. He had the great idea of putting on locking gas caps so the thieves just punctured the tanks to get what they wanted. He eventually gave up on the locking gas cap idea as the cost to replace tanks was so much higher than just the gas. Probably not an issue for boats with built in tanks but for a pontoon boat it would be just as easy to punch a hole in the tank and siphon as pulling off a gas cap.

I can think of several things that might deter this type of activity. Neither end very nicely.
