I just thought I would pop in and comment on APCO. During the spring everyone praised APCO for managing the levels and bringing the lake up quickly. They were prasised for applying for the variance. Now I am very happy that they took the actions that they did and have loved the higher levels we have had this year but please spare me the praise for their Altruism. The fact is they raised the levels when they did NOT need the water to generate power so they WOULD have water when they wanted to generate power. She is dropping like a rock and they are "just a generating". They do NOT care about your water level...just keep that in mind next time you feel like slapping em on the back...

Our benefit was merely a "by product" of their agenda...

I can agree somewhat with ol Bob. But I think a little praise needs to be sent their (APCO) way for bringing the water up so fast so that when they do have to start generating the water is there for them to use. Yes it hurts to see it going away as it did last year but you can't really blame it all on them. There are many forces in play here and in the end lake home owners are the ones who suffer. Enjoy it while we can. We still have plenty of H2O to enjoy. Just imagine if the "bring up" schedule stayed the same as it was and the conditions were as they are now (about the same as last year)....we would be beaching our boats instead of stepping down off the piers to get in them. Glass can be half full or empty...it's your choice which you look at.

Hopefully things will take a turn for the better (rain) but even if the level continues to drop at the rate it has for the past couple of weeks we will still be in better shape than we were last year. We need to pray for some really mild tempered tropical storms to come through and dump some rain on us.

Some would say the same about their position on the boat ban - eliminate options for those who wish to enjoy the lake and you raise the value of the remaining ones. Hydro power is a low cost, green way to generate power for the power company, and we are an energy hungry society. If we limit our energy consumption, we will mitigate the need to generate power and help keep the lake up. We can do nothing about the required downstream flows, and are very selfish to place our desire for full pool above all other needs. The point is – Alabama Power Company/Southern Company is a business, much as the Government is politics; smile when it goes your way, because they ain’t doing it for you.

I planted grass. I must water the grass (or it will die) and that is draining the lake. My pump is using more power to pump the water, so APC must generate more power to run my pump; such tangled webs we weave.

Sorry.......

HA HA. I wish I was half as smart as you think you are. And BTW-why would you copy another members name?

Oh great, thanks. Now I will have to recycle more beer through the septic tank /groundwater/lake ecosystem to compensate - I suggest that you do the same.....

I'm doing my part but I guess a couple extra 6 packs a week wouldn't be to much to ask to help with the water level

While I hate seeing the level drop, I have to tell you that you are wrong Bob. They are releasing the "required" water that is mandated. Not a drop more. Since they have to release, they do generate power at the same time. That also keeps your electric rates in the top ten in the whole country. It is not a need to generate power and that is causing the release ... as I said it is the other way around. What they are doing is releasing the "required" amount during peak demands since that is when everyone is running their A/C.

The got the variance to raise the level early in the season in case the drought continued, in consideration of the recreational use. If they hadn't, they would still be required to release and we would be in much, much worse shape. Just look back at last year. We got to 486 in May and then down from there. At least we held until mid June and hopefull we do not get below 484 until at least September. That will carry us through most of the season.

I am there every weekend and there is very little boat traffic even with water ... so i am sure gas prices have a good bit to do with that.

There are basically two schools of thought. Lower the pool level in the reservoir, more retention for flood control (not an issue of late), higher the pool level in the reseroir, more head for running the turbines. You gotta ask yourself, do you want a full pool, or do you want air conditioning?

Sounds like a full pool and AC go hand in hand!!!
