For you Lake Martin experienced folks, how much clearance is there under the Highway 49 bridge? Is there a problem for an average bowrider at full pool? I have heard the bimini top would probably have to come down, but I am looking at a place on the east side of this bridge on Blue Creek and wanted your opinions. Thanks.

That all depends on whose definition of "average" you use.

Prior to the mid-to-late 1980s, few if any runabouts would have had a problem getting under the bridge at idle speed. (Tops down, though!) But since then, the size of the "average" boat on the lake has increased.

One thing to consider: Fomby's is on that side of the bridge, and Fomby's rents pontoon boats... and those pontoon boats have to get under the bridge.

not all pontoon boats and not all runabouts will get under the bridge at full pool. even without tops.

as boat get larger, and they surely will, properties on the wrong side of the bridge will lag in appreciation.

that bridge is such a problem, that The Cove in its hey day had a anchored dock and a shuttle service on the lake side of the bridge.

in addition, it is a long way from most of the good stuf on the lake

The windshield on my "normal" 21' bowrider will not clear it at full pool. Needs to be down a foot or so. For the last many years, that's the time called "summer".

Generally speaking, I think a lot of pontoon boats need pretty little headspace compared to a runabout, unless they have a large console.

We had a place on the east side of the bridge several years ago. We had no problem getting our 185 Searay under the bridge even when the water was at its highest. We even had a pontoon boat that went under the bridge. I bought it from Sonny Fomby so I knew it would fit. A positive to that side of the bridge is that not everyone can get under it so there is less traffic. Good luck with your search.

20 years ago 21 feet was not normal, it was huge.

The newer pontoons with the larger tubes will not go under the bridge at full pool. Fomby's orders all of theirs with the smaller tubes to guarentee they will go under. But if you have ever gone under that bridge you can't help but notice that it may not matter much longer as the bridge may fall at any time....lol.

Please do not take this as a smart a**, but not to worry about that since this lake has not been at 490.0 in many years. Maybe some day though.

I have a Chap. 204 SSI with a bridge clearance of 4'4" and I haven't had any trouble getting under the bridge. It's close at full pool, but it still made it.

Just dont forget to watch your anchor light when the water is up. Last time I was fishing the rip rap by the bridge at night I watched 3 boats in a row forget all about their light and crameed them right into the bridge...
