I thought that if something happened to the president and vice president that the next in line is the speaker of the house... which is Nancy Pelosi... Not a good idea.

That only comes into play if the POTUS and VP are killed together, say in a plane crash or some other accident or assassination. If I remember right the line of succession names 7 positions that are in line. However many it is, they are never all in the same place at the same time. Even at State of the union speeches one of the line of succession postions do not attend and are held in a secure location.
