whats a wood duck box.. how do you build it .. had ducks last year that laid eggs in the day lilies I saw them , two day later gone .. no sign of them.. How do you attract the loons ..Bird not person?

We got work to do with you girl.. Loons ain't going to be attracted unless you swim in the middle of the lake during winter and dive for fish.. However the Col Tom's be a good place to discuss it..

I'm on Lay Lake large open water and believe it or not I had never seen a wood duck on this lake. I have seen gobs of geese, millions of mallards, countless coots, and one lone loon. Wood Ducks love swamps and wooded areas and are very shy. They hate people, dogs, racoons, and Georgia water lawyers. However during the spring all rules change and they fan out everywhere looking for a tree with just the right size hole.. problem is.. you guessed it... nesting habitat just isnt what it used to be... so when she spots your wood duck nest box, yep - she homes in on it like a predator drone to a Taliban campfire. I first put mine up last year around the middle of February... no activity till the end of March when I first noticed a female wood duck bonzai into the box. The male would show up just after daybreak and whistle her out of the box... then they would swim around awile (male wood ducks are hands down the most beautiful bird in Alabama). The male wood duck would return about every 4 hours and call her out..this went on for a month and then it was all over. The book say's the ducks usually return year after year to the same nest box so I guess a big Welcome Back is in order to the couple currently filling my box with eggs... if you havent given it a try - go for it... just google Wood Duck Nest Box and read up.. also they're are some very afordable kits available on the internet... it well worth it... I'll upload a photo of mine... it's kind of like Purple Martins - build it and they will come!

p.s. As to Loons I dont know - I heard once that their presence is a testiment to good water quality... Like I said I once saw one here on the Coosa - he must of been headed somewhere else.

Dirt- What are "Eastern" bluebirds? I have Bluebirds that nest under my top deck 2 times a year, I think. I sit on the upper deck and watch them work all day long getting food for the young-uns. Quite a sight.

I've seen Eastern Bluebirds in my yard. The best food to draw bluebirds with is mealy worms.
Lately I've been seeing a lot of Indigo Buntings flying around in the trees as I'm driving down the road. I wish I knew how to get them to my feeders. I'd love to get a picture of one.

Thanks for the info.. I will give it a shot.. Have a short sandy slough on the end of the sea wall.. Far enuff from the purple martin houses so as to not disturb the colonies..
Interesting experiment.. will get house plans/data off the internet and break out the saws this weekend..
Woodies are indeed beautiful, but martins are as fun most pets.. a helluva more enjoyable then the cat (she's an indoor cat, has no claws, so no problem there.)

Thanks, Hound. I have bluebird houses at our place in PTC, GA. They are so much fun to watch. The birds normally have two batches of babies a year - sometimes if I'm lucky - three.
I would like to put some houses up at The Lake, but wanted to see if it was worth the effort.

We have lot's of blue birds here on the Lake.. don't know much about them except the like to hang out on the Martine houses and around the deck.. good luck..
