Wondering if I should break down this year and buy one of these lights? I recall previous messages with how to build one but do not think I want to go down that road. For those that have them, do you think the light really enhances the fishing - is worth it?

I hear the light attracts not only fish but fishermen to your dock... But whats a little company.

They are cool and would be great for kids at the dock on a night swim.

Snakes? Plural? Here in redneck land we call that a “target rich environment.” I buy those .410 shells for exactly that reason, but have never seen Mr. No Shoulders over the light.

I am with you on a the target rich environment, but you haven't seen them becasue they hang out in the shadows at the edge of the light and catch unsuspecting prey as it comes or goes.

In 6 years have only seen one small snake around my place and never thought of the monster light attracting them. If that is a fact, that surely impacts whether I want one or not.

We have one and it does attract the fish and fishermen. Be careful if you mount yours on a pole because we let ours stick out into the water past the pier and a careless fisherman broke our bulb. (85.00) When it was repaired, we turned in to shine inward under our pier. We have had a lot of fun seeing the huge bass, but alas, they won't bite. :)

The catchable fish are like the snakes mentioned above. They hang on the edges waiting for unsuspecting prey to swim by. The fish in the light are fun to watch, but the ones on the edge are fun to catch.

It does not really enhance the fishing that much. The fish just don't bite around the light. I have caught all species of fish around our light but I just don't catch that many numbers you think you would. I have fished around other peoples lights and have had the same luck. Yes I am one of those fisherman pulling up to your dock at night. I have caught more fish on the outer dark edges of the light. I have never seen a snake at the light and we have not seen an increase in snake activity since putting it in. The price of the light has gone up alot. I only paid $236.00 for a single 50' light kit. I think it is over $300.00 now.

I agree it does not help fishing that much but when a large stripe ambushes a minnow in the light it is an awesome show. We have seen one small water snake in the light. I have a Taurus revolver that holds 5 410 shotgun shells. It is a great snake buster I am sure if only I was carrying it when I see a snake!!!!
The lights are definitely worth it for the entertainment value but I would not buy it for fishing.

More than likely, snakes coming to a light are water snakes looking for a meal, just like the fish. My history with snakes in 18 years on LM, they show up in early Spring, and as soon as you start the lawn mower, the WeedEater, the boat/waverunner engines, the swimming, etc, POOF, they are gone. Some exceptions, but few. They WILL come out of hiding to get into a minnow trap or a fish box at dockside. Bulkhead rip-rap is perfect habitat. And, our common water snake is VERY similar to a Cottonmouth. Big fish darting across an underwater light at night is a delightful sight. Don't let the chance of a snake ruin that for you.

8's green monster lights provide great fishing for my son. He goes out in front of 8's dock, throws in his line, watchers lots of fish, and has a great time! ..... It's the catching part that is limited.

Recall the theme from last spring.. Underwater green light.. Have a friend who has one, it's 'too cool for school' to watch fish at night, but cost him big bucks.. someone had posted his version of building a reasonably priced one.. Wonderful if his worked? Or electrocuted trying?

Only 120 volts AC, what's the worst that could happen? Redneck underwater light was working when the water left it dry, made it one season - no problem. I did clean it off a few weeks ago to get it ready for Spring, and it should be submerged in another two feet or so.

How about sharing the redneck lite plans Summer?? I put a GFCI circuit in my boat house, so it should be safe..
|
and I agree....I wouldn't trust my kids or myself in the water with anything that wasn't 100% reliable either; one of these days I'll get a Green Monster too.
