Just got cable restored after lightening hit on Friday around 7pm. Electricity was back on by 10pm but phone is still out. Lost 1 new irrigation controller and who knows how many values, several outdoor plugs, three TVs (the ones that were on when the bolt hit), one DVD player, one desktop computer, all cable spliters, one cable amplifier, and still accessing the damage. I know of one neighbor who lost big screen TV. When the irrigation controller popped, it threw the cover through a section of screen on my porch. Cable guy said we were lucky there were no fires. Each cable splitter was charred. Quite a weekend! Anybody else get hit?

not directly but our water was cut off Sat morning. Turns out lightning struck a water main and fried 2 large valves. Finally got water back around 6PM. Man, i would rather be without electricity than water.
Same thing happened to me in Bham - that controller will flat blow up when lightning strikes the irrigation lines.
Glad no one was hurt.

Lightning is a covered loss on your HO policy but probably not worth it. We made a claim after lightning last July 3 - lost an air conditioning unit, fairly new refrigerator and various electronics. The "good hands" people promptly jacked our rates, citing the claim as the basis.

you can beat this by changing companies as soon as the claim is paid.

I have a different insurer for my NC home than I have for Lake Martin.

You must be special. I have never been able to get anyone to insure the second home without insuring the first. Of course it is different if you have one classified as a rental.

I was not able to have separate carriers when I lived in GA - now that I live considerably farther away it does not seem to be an issue
