Can someone please confirm that Charter Cable is the only CATV provider in Dadeville? I've heard some comments that there is a smaller, private company that's been in town for a while, but I've also heard that they sold the accounts and cable plant to Charter a while back. We're seeing some significant cable leakage (improper radio emissions) in Dadeville and just want to know who to call. Thanks.

There is another cable company that covers parts of the lake called Com-Link cable. But I do not believe there is anywhere in the country that two cable companies service the same area. They normally buy exclusive rights to certain geography. The competition is the Dish and soon AT&T with U-Verse But that will be a while before we see that at the lake - it is great but going in to large cities first since they are laying all new fiber optic cable. The cost is less, all HD, super fast internet 16 Mbs.

Montgomery has Knology and Charter in the same area.

Then I stand corrected. Who owns the cabling or do they have duplicate cables. When they deregulated home phone service, since the baby bells (old AT&T) owned the wire to the home, they got to charge a fee to the 3rd party phone companies which made it too costly for most to compete unless they got significant volume. When cable companies started moving phone over coax, that is when home phone prices started to fall. Now AT&T is getting in the TV business again with their U-Verse offering. It is a cable killer but roll out is targeted at large markets first. I am fortunate that in my area of Atlanta we have it.

WW - whats the story on U-Verse? Do you need a "cable Box" etc? Can you DVR off of it? I'm in Alpharetta and it sounds interesting. THX

You will need their box. They offer a free DVR as one of their receivers right now. Yes it is available in Alpharetta. Internet speeds are faster than cable. They have comcast spinning trying to upgrade as quickly as possible. Now you see comcast really pushing their phone service as part of a TV/Internet/Phone package just like AT&T. That helps the consumer, but I think AT&T has comcast beat ... at least for now. But it will take AT&T a while to roll out so comcast has time to catch up.
