Man drowns at D.A.R.E. Park
By Dale Liesch Published: Wednesday, May 13, 2009 12:03 AM CDT The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate Monday’s drowning death of a Dadeville man on Lake Martin.
An initial investigation showed that 30-year-old Christopher Tolbert drowned after he was pushed while “playing” on a pier near the public boat launch at D.A.R.E. Power Park Monday afternoon, according to a statement released by the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department.
The statement said “it was determined that Tolbert and other individuals had been playing on the pier when the victim was pushed off into the water and never surfaced.”
“Tolbert and some other individuals were pushing each other off the pier,” Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said. “A primary investigation showed that it was accidental, but we are still waiting on a report from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.”
Volunteers from the Peckerwood Rescue Squad and the Alexander City Rescue Squad spent about an hour searching for Tolbert after the accident was reported at around 1:10 p.m.
The Peckerwood Rescue Squad recovered Tolbert’s body at approximately 2:35 p.m., according to squad president Terry Newman.
“There isn’t any glory in it,” Newman said. “All you are trying to do is give the family some peace.”
Newman said Monday was the first time the rescue squad had been called out to assist on a drowning on Lake Martin this year.

What a sad thing. Fun can turn to tragedy so quickly.
