Does anyone have any info on what looked like a small speed boat getting busted in Sandy Creek this weekend? I think it happened Sunday or Monday. We were sitting on our dock watching the kids swim and a 20-24' catamaran speed boat with an I/O engine blew by in the distance doing about sixty or seventy. About an hour later there were two MPs towing it out of Sandy Creek. This all happened in Sandy Creek Estates near Smith Mountain Fire tower. There were also two Sheriff's in the neighborhood at the same time. I am thinking they carted off a drunk boater. Maybe the MP's can fill us in.

I didn't see them get busted but I did see and hear them Saturday and Sunday. I don't think they were on the lake Monday. Did you see that little boat that looked like it had a metal cowling over the top? I didn't see it but my wife described it to me.

I had seen the one that was set up like a hydroplane a few weeks back - not close enough to confirm, but looks like it may be a mono-hull. Cute. Did not see the runner, but did hear someone a couple of times.

I admit to being heavy-handed when complaining about grammatical errors posted on an informal message board. But this article was written by someone who gets paid to write, and yet it contained errors that most grade-schoolers should have caught.

"Tuesday, a boat operator turned himself in to authorities and was charged with reckless operation, attempting to allude and for violating an idle speed maker." "Allude" and "elude" sound the same, but they are different words with different meanings. And it is an idle speed MARKER, not maker. I am surprised and happy that the reporter used "idle" instead of "idol," though it was probably a lucky guess.

"Authorities declined to name the owner but confirmed that they have reclaimed there and that the owner is now out on bond." "There?" My guess is that the reporter meant to use "their." Again, two words that sound the same do not necessarily mean the same thing. And whether the correct word was "there" or "their," there is still something missing. "There?" Where? OR "their?" Their what?

I realize that many of you will think "So what's the big deal?" If you feel that way about a writer with sub-standard skills getting paid to write, I hope you feel the same way about paying a mechanic to work on your engine using nothing but a hammer.

Every good mechanic knows that you must have Mr. Big Pliers, Mr. Big Screwdriver, some WD40 and duct tape to fix anything, come on... As far as job skills, what is your take on our politicians?

Some people operate their boats with bumpers bouncing along the hull and some, having no clue as to the nuances of the English language, write for newspapers. Ignorance reigns everywhere.

I was reading the Dadeville Record this morning. It was absolutely filled with errors too numerous to count. Even being a small town newspaper, there should be a competent individual responsible for not letting those mistakes go out. Perhaps there is and just not spending enough time on it. As the guy says about restaurants (WSFA Montgomery) getting a low score, "CLEAN UP!!"
