I am still amazed by the folks who run their docking lights at night. They are called docking lights for a reason. You have no additional help from them in any way on open water. They disturb your night vision and the vision of others who are approaching you. They are also ILLEGAL to run at night unless you are docking. Here is a tip for those of you who may have trouble at night. If you cant see directly in front of you, try looking to the side to allow your periphery vision to get a view. It works well. For some reason your eyes can pick up many things your straight on vision will not. As for those spot lights, they are ILLEGAL as well and completely wreck oncoming boaters vision. I would hope the Marine Police will chime in on this as well to verify and give some more insight. If you want additional visibility of your boat to others at night, buy a strobe nav stern light, but remember your regular light is still required.

Rods are responsible for night vision and are located in greater density around the periphia of the eye. That is why you get better night/low light vision from peripheal vision.

Another tip is to decrease light sources on the boat. A dimmer circuit on the dash lights will help a lot with night vision. If you don't have a dimmer try placing a towel or something simular to block out the lights from your dash. In a few minutes you will be able to see much better.

We live full time on the lake and often boat at night. I am always amazed at the abuse of docking lights. Also, we sometimes hear and/or see PWC's on the water at night. Feel our boater education is very lacking. I know it would be costly but an "on water" test would be helpful.

I have seen MP make night stops for this problem. And, if you go to the Fireworks on 7/4 by boat, you will see the MP rushing to boats with docking lights on to stop it.

We were out Friday and Saturday night. About HALF of the pontoon boats had their docking lights on. Did they not take the test? Or are they too drunk to notice their on? Or are the children on the boat "playing" with the lights. This behavior wouldn't be tolerated on the road, nor would it be safe. Please, people, think about someone else besides yourself sometimes...Don't worry...I see the red and green lights just fine...When I see the docking lights, I want to get out of the way as fast as I can.
