Just had a new pier and floating dock installed. I want to make sure it last. Any advice on process? I was thinking about applying a sealant with some stain pigment so it was not discolor and war with elements. Sound right?

I have considered staining mine as well. However everytime I see one tha has been stained it looks kind of un-natural. Not to mention that the darker color seems to hold heat and just look hot! I know people recommend against it but I just pressure wash mine each spring and it seems to be doing fine. Plus it forces me to do a real close inspection of he structure and repair any problems before they get too serious.

we use Behr deck seal (at HomeDepot)...it has a slight color. the wood looks very natural. it comes in different colors. the # we used is actually transparent...the wood grain shows through nicely. we use a Behr cleaner and conditioner on the wood before we pressure wash. (the seal has to be applied with care, any mistake shows up!)

My neighbor had someone out spraying his waterfront structures a week or so ago and the overspray was going all in the lake. Doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

It's an after thought but did you consider synthetic decking. It's more expensive but maintenance free

I stained mine with Behr 4 years ago. It's a dark chocolate color and tho it looks nice from a distance. I hate it! It's hot, as someone mentioned. And you have to roll it on and as some else mentioned, every mistake is very visable.

Use a natural behr sealer and enjoy. I can't wait for mine to need to be rebuilt but the darn yella wood is supposed to last longer than I will. We'll see.

Peace,

We went with an opaque stain on the deck about 4 years ago (cannot remember brand), it needs to be redone, but has good longevity. I would NOT use anything like that on a pier - it is VERY hot on bare feet. Also agree with application when the water is down.
