So Matt how did Lake Martin fair as compared to Lake Travis? 47 Arrested (Friday through Sunday) Crowd size estimated at 35,000 (same as they estimated Lake Martin event) - 14 people for boating while intoxicated - 19 for public intoxication - 6 for driving while intoxicated - 8 for other charges such as possession of a controlled substance - 77 citations for water safety violations such as failure to wear a life preserver or recklessly operating a boat. - 4 people suffered injuries that required hospitalization but were not life-threatening - several minor injuries were treated at the scene

The organizers for the event on Lake Travis were in contact with the Lake Martin organizers early on in the process and the marine police talked to a couple of different law enforcement agencies that were part of the Travis task force. They asked us what went right, what went wrong, etc. and what we would do differently. My opinion remains that much of the success of the Lake Martin Aquapalooza event came from the plan put together by Russell's folks and the hours and hours of hard work the LMRA volunteers and others put in to "park" the boats for the event. Looking at the video and pictures from the Lake Travis event it looks a lot like the plan that was put in place for Lake Martin.

As for law enforcement comparisons, the Texas Parks and Wildlife department alone sent 68 officers and 20 patrol boats to the Lake Travis event and there were over 100 uniformed officers on patrol on the water. At our event there were 24 marine police officers in 7 patrol boats and each sheriff's department had a boat staffed by deputies. We made 30 custodial arrests and issued about the same number of citations. The other numbers were comparable as well. If you figure we had 35,000 people come through, then 30 is a drop in the bucket and I'll take that ratio any day.

I wasn't at Lake Travis. The main thing that impressed me about the law enforcement at the Lake Martin event was that they "let people have a good time" unless people were endangering themselves or others.

From my vantage point at Aquapalooza last year I have to agree all the Marine Police did a great job in that they let all have a good time unless they were a potential danger to themselves or others. I am sure they could have come down harder on a lot of folks, but think they wanted to see everyone have a good time, which was appreciated by all I am sure.
