I was wondering if there are artists out there who had their artwork consigned at Red Hill Gallery when it burned in December. If so were you compensated by the gallery owner for your items? Thanks

I heard the building was not insured.....if that rumor is true, I doubt it.

I thought the gallery was empty at the time of the fire.

Thanks for your reply. True the building was not insured-the art business "Red Hill Gallery" was insured. I am trying to reach other artist that had art consigned at the gallery to find out if they have been compensated.

My "apparently not" post was a reply to "the gallery being empty" post-sorry I have never "blogged" before...

Good luck with attempting to get your money from them.  I had my work there and typically did not get paid for over a year.  And this was with me callig continually and complaining.  The owners played off of each other supposedly not "knowing" if the piece gad sold, not knowing what it sold for, not answering or not returning my calls.  I am an out-of-town artists.  This was extremely frustrating. Luckily, I had already terminated my relationship with them and had no pieces there when it burned.  I do know that they were in considerable financial distress.  At least on of the owners also owns Gallery East in Montgomery.  You may try contacting them there.

I assume you are talking about the gallery in The Shoppes at East Chase? They've been out of business for quite a while. With so many artists in the LM area, it would seem the area would be ripe for an Artist's cooperative in Alex City.

In December Gallery East had moved to Peppertree Shopping Center on Vaughn Road in Montgomery

Thanks for the information-I did try to get paid by the owner of Gallery East. He was VERY RUDE/NASTY. The money he owes is not very much but its the principal of the thing. I hope that the word gets out so that other artists don't have the same experience. I guess he's never heard of bad karma....

They are not out of business-the post is correct that they relocated the business to the Pepper Tree shopping center

Regardless of how much/how little they owe you, keep in mind that is YOUR money.  When a gallery sells a piece of your work, the commission they receive is money coming from YOU.  They never owned the piece, nor do they own the money they received on the sale. In reality, you could have demanded the money on the day they sold the piece and they were legally obligated to give it to you.  Please continue to pursue this.  I hate it when galleries try their best to stick it to artists. It is hard enough to make a living with your creativity without having to deal with bozos like this!

PS - Here is a really great article about the artist/gallery relationship:

Lablover, Thanks for the reply and for cheering me on! I enjoyed the article-thanks for sharing the link. Good stuff! Really not sure how to approach the situation w/the gallery owner-don't care for the "attitude" that's for sure! I try to avoid situations & people that "don't bring out the best in me".
