Just saw this app in use last night. Wow. If you have an iPhone and can part with $10 at the App Store, try this one out if you want more navigation information about Lake Martin.

Do you have to be on line to use this App? I have an iPad, but don't have cellular data. I'd love such a system, if the map data can be stored in the iPad.

Broke thanks for link. After reviewing istore check android marketplace and also found the Navionics app very interesting as compared to $150 for navionics card for boat GPS.
OSMS would bet you have to have GPS link to use the card. Otherwise no way to locate your position.

My iPad (and I believe, all) has GPS built-in w/o wi/fi or cellular necessary. My question is does the software download map/lake data or is it downloaded realtime as needed when you move around from the cellular system?

The Navionics map detail is downloaded from Wi-Fi as you specify and does not have to come through the mobile cell network. It doesn't work like Google maps where that loads map tiles as you are travelling. Once you have downloaded the lakes you are done. We used Navionics on my friends iPhone during the poker run to measure distance traveled.

Tried this out on the iPad and it works very well. The only shortcoming is that the iPad's display is tough to see in full sun, perhaps the same for the iPhone, I don't know. Under the bimini top not so bad. There is another $2-3 add on that lets one do trip planning, and that is certainly worth the additional cost for me. I'm pleased. It is a good way to get some additional mileage out of our iPad, since the latter is pretty much a solution looking for a problem, anyway. Makes my decision to buy an $800 chart-plotter go much further down the pike. Just need to keep a ziplock bag around to keep water off the iPad.
