We have confirmation the scam is active in the Kowaliga area. The Kowaliga Volunteer Fire Department does not go door to door for donations! If you have been witness to this scam, please contact the local police or Mack Daughtry. If you need contact information, send me an email. These criminals are working areas all around the lake, so be careful.

The good news is we have them and their vehicle on high definition video, the bad news is they have yet to be caught. The more witnessess, the better the case when they do get caught.....especially if you talked to and/or gave them money and you can validate the identity.

Just so everyone knows, it appears there is more than one "team" doing this (both male and female). One confirmed description we have is of a short heavy set blond lady.

I would think that a good way to figure out the legit folks from the crooks is: say you'll be glad to donate, but first you need to see a drivers license, and write down all of the info; write down a tag number, too. If someone is OK with you having this information, they're probably legit.

I don't know about that.  Even if my wife or daughter was collecting for a very legitimate cause, I would NOT want some guy getting her name and address off her license.  That seems creepy and I don't think I'm paranoid.

I told the girls at my door that I would be happy to support them, and if they would leave me some information about the group, I would send a check later.  They did not have any thing like a phamplet, brochure , etc to leave and said they only accepted cash .  That is when the red light went off in my brain.  I was so shook up that I didn't even think to try and get car tag number until after they were pulling away and couldn't see.

They came to our house and my husband told them if they would give him an invoice he would mail a check and they said they couldn't do that.  He said well then how do I know you are legit and they said our t-shirts.  They had on matching t-shirts with fire and rescue on them.  My husband said no thank you and sent them on their way.  They went to my neighbors house and she was leary but decided to give them a check for 10.00 so they would leave.  I told her it was a scam and she immediately called her bank  in Eclectic and they told her she needed to close that account and open a new one as they had been having trouble with these people.  Beware!!
