I hope to be a resident of the lake the latter part of this year. We have a 12 year old son who wake boards. Question: Is there any organized wakeboard teams? If so, are they affiliated with any of the middle schools or junior high schools? Thanks in advance for the responses.

If there are any they are on the East side of the lake. (Blue Creek, Stillwaters, Sandy Creek, etc.)

Don't think there is a team on Martin. Check Smith Lake, Lake Altoona, Lake Harris, Weis Lake. Maybe you could round them all up and have a big wake board throw-down at Lake Lanier. The term "wake" board is synanomous with interfering with others on the lake. Try to be courteous to others who may not like waves washing over their docks or throwing them out of their boats.

Sorry Muddy, just as there are probably discourteous skiers and wakeboarders, I can tell you there are just as many discourteous fisherman, recreational boaters, and PWC owners. From my point of view, watching teens and adolescents develop the skills of balance, strength, conditioning, and stamina while overcoming the fear of water randomly entering normally sealed bodily crevasses, outweighs seeing them in front of the tube, computer, x-box, or with too much time on their hands that leads to trouble. I enjoy seeing life on the lake! Just my opinion.

I've been skiing regularly for 40 years, and wakeboarding since it became popular. It's a wonderful family sport for young and old and it does develop great muscle strength and coordination (keeps me away from my X-box too!)

I just hope I'm still able to "get up" when I'm 80!

There are organized clinics and competitions on Lake Martin and on all big lakes in the State this summer! On May 8th & 22nd, for instance, there were clinics held at Anchor Bay and at the Ridge. There are weekend clinics at Anchor Bay and there is an upcoming competition for all skill levels and age groups at Children's harbor on June 4-6.

If you have any questions, call Anchor Bay or any Russell Marina.

FYI, One of the things taught at these clinics is that there are 44,000 acres of water on Lake Martin and when you go boarding, be sure to find one or 2 of these acres where you won't be disturbing anybody else's enjoyment of the Lake!
