This slow overcast weekend I saved 2 peoples bacon. A sailboat stranded on the rocks by scrub island (between Harbor Point marina and Chucks) and a jet ski at the rock who was broken down. With much effort by my powerfull ski boat I pulled the sail boat out of the mud and rocks. He had the cahones to try to tell me how to do it and where he wanted to be pulled. I said no problem and when he decided to do it my way he was free. Funny, he put his slow moving boat in jepordy of comming apart at the keel on an Island no bigger than my dock but he knew best how to free it. Do you think just maybe he should have not tacked into it in the first place? The jet ski looked to be about 300 years old and had no business being that far from its dock. The guy and gal were gratefull for the tow almost back to Harbor point marina durring the lightning storm but in my opnion should have not been there in the first place.
MY POINT.
Normal gratitude on the lake consists of offering to pay for gas or a case of beer. Which ever is more expensive. At that point I feel the person is truley gratefull. Of course I never take them up on the offer but I feel that expresses true gratefullness. I was not even asked my name by the sailboat fellers (both older gents) and the only gratitude I got for 30 min of my time was a simple wave off.
Ill never stop helping people on the lake but this forum needs to set gratitude rules for all to follow. Any more ideas????
Oh yea, the jet ski youngins were very gratefull for the tow and the beer WE gave them. I got a date with the gal next week. (just kidding)

Same thing happened to us the beginning of this year....towed a couple of yuppies and their Nautique to Blue Creek Marina and the man acted as though I was had only done what he expected me to do and let us go with a "I'll rescue you next time" comment. Like the other guy....I would not take the offer of money or beer but it needs to be made anyway.....correction....I MIGHT not take it....:)

Two years ago we were stranded in the middle of the water. Didn't have a clue what was wrong with the boat. Young guys in a small boat hauled us in to the marina. We were hot and frustrated so we may not have seemed grateful but we were and gave them a sincere thanks. Our parting words were "if you're ever stranded, hope we can do the same for you". A few months later we were coming by the rock late in the evening. Only one boat in sight and the young guys were waving us down needing help. Yep, same boat that had hauled us. Their battery was dead so we loaned them our extra and told them where we live. Next morning our battery was sitting on the pier. I believe in the old saying, what goes around comes around. Most folks aren't going to except gas or beer (unless they are thirsty at the time). But after you have been hauled in, you'll always stop to help someone else out after that.

I am all for helping people who are stranded. I do it because It's the right thing to do. I don't expect anything from the people I help. If they want to be buttheads I just grin and say, "Have a great day and I feel like God wanted me to help you." Then they don't know whether to say thanks or wonder if I'm crazy. Most people always say thank you. The majority of people I have helped have been good folks at heart.

I am a big believer in kharma-- the energy you put into the universe will come back to you. Or as granny used to say "As ye sow so shall ye reap". Or maybe it's just the way my mamma raised me-- just plain good manners to help out folks who need it. I have to believe though, that the good guys far out number the pooh-pooh heads. So, 4 the lake gets a cosmic "attaboy"! Something good is heading down your path.

All of a sudden I feel the urge to start using terms like "make peace not war" and "grovey" Just kidding. I still feel like beer or gas is the right jesture. Im gonna help ya anyway but gas and beer is good. Think of some others and we can vote on the standard jesture if your boat is broke and you need help. Rember the old one "gas, grass or a$$, nobody rides for free". I kinda like that one. How bout catfish and moonshine. For the ladies manicure and peticure, whatever those are. How about Cheetos and Jack Daniels. Come on, get creative.

was to take the folks to the closest shore with boat...or take the boat to shore and then take them to the closest service area...just got tired of carting folks all over the lake...when if they had any sense they wouldnt have been broken or stuck anyhow.....

With an attitude like that, instead of goodbye, I will say good riddance.

Our first outting on the lake,on a weekday, left us stranded. We were a short distance from our cove. One boat came by. They tried to ignore us but finally felt guilty and came over. They towed us back to our dock. We offered beer or gas. He asked for $15.00 for gas. She asked for $20.00. We gave them the money, grateful that we hadn't remained stranded. As they pulled away they laughed and said that they were on their way over to a friends place which was right around the corner and that we had made the trip free for them. I still was happy not to be dog paddling and trying to pull the boat but acting kind wouldn't have hurt since we were obviously upset anyhow.
A couple of weeks later we saw a boat in the water with two large inflatables behind it. We avoided it thinking that the folks were trying to get started. Thirty minutes later they hadn't moved and we inched toward them not wanting to run over kids who might be in the water. Sure enough they were broken down. We towed them in and they said thanks. A couple of days later one of the children showed up at the front door with a bag of very nice peaches.
Any jesture of appreciation is nice. I am always afraid to offer beer in the Bible belt but not everyone will accept money for gas. We took a couple of nice steaks to a neighbor who did us a favor and who we knew liked to fire up the grill. Which reminds me. Is there a place anywhere near the lake to get a good steak? I would like to support the local economy but haven't found a decent steak in the Alex city area yet. Hoping maybe I just don't know where to look.

Dockside at Anchor Bay has a great ribeye. Always thick and juicy.
