I just did a free word search on the forum. The word I searched was "greed". Between 3/11/06 and today there are 20 posts containing the word greed. I didn't do "greedy" cuz I dont have time to eleminate posts that have both. I have made my opinion clear on this issue. I feel the way I do for personal reasons and I wont pretend to hide behind wakes, noise and erosion. But I have my reasons. Like feb, I will stand behind them. If we disagree, it means we disagree on THIS issue. We may and probably do agree on many more. It doesn't mean I hate you or want to see harm, (be it physical, financial or emotional) done to you or yours.

I do like to 'stir the puddin' sometimes. I love a good debate and sometimes even an argument. Heck, I will even take a position I may not believe for the sake of a 'good argument'. Now with all that being said, can somebody PLEASE explain to me EXACTLY how this new law (as it surely will be) is based on greed. The land in question will sell, with or without the new law. Maybe not to these GA developers, but to someone. I for one think that if it brings the purported development to the area it will be a GREAT thing. How many of you have ever even BEEN to Clay county. This will be the biggest thing that will ever happen there. It is very rural and some might even say 'blighted'. I am sure the unemployment is higher than average. I know for a FACT that illiteracy in the county is rampant. This will bring JOBS to an area that has no other major source of employment for the citizens. Jobs are a good thing guys. I am sure the developers are rich, and will most likely get richer. That is capitolism my freinds. So they are 'greedy' for doing what they do for a living. Are you 'greedy' because you get up and go to your job. NO. You are doing what you can to provide for your family.

We all have our opinions. Some are more passionate about them than others, but none the less each is intitled to his own. Growth is a good thing guys, but it MUST be controlled. I doubt ANY of you would want to buy a house in a subdivision that did not have covenants and restricitons. Same thing happening here, but on a larger scale. If you find a house you like, you check out the covenants. If you can't live by them, you look elsewhere. SIMPLE.

Just my opinion, and I am sure that many of you think it is wrong.

And BTW-- I say surely will become law because Gov. Riley is from Clay county. Has HUGE farm there. Which way ya think he is gonna go.

FLAME ON!!

Ok, I am still a little confused by all of this. I will list negatives and positives with my opinions for each.
NEGATIVES
1. Big boats cause bigger wakes. -True, but not at the rate of a typical windy day, storm, or busy day with small boats (fishing tournament). EXISTING LEGISLATION covers causing wake in congested area (lets say the rock on the weekends?)

2. Big boats are dumping sewage. -Not true, they store it and it is pumped out into a septic tank from the marina. EXISTING LEGISLATION requires annual inspections! Little boats have no provisions for this, therefor they go into the water!

3. Big boats impede my view of the lake. -Come on, how many times has a cruiser parked between your dock and your view?

4. Big boats bring down property value -They ARE NOT mobile homes. I have never seen a 33 foot mobile home cost $250k and up. My boat is 10 years old and is still worth more than most mobile homes.

5. Big boats are loud -True for some, however EXISTING LEGISLATION covers the decible level emitted from a vessle.

6. Big boats are fast -True and false. My boat is 660 horsepower and tops off at 38mph. The "go fast" boats are fast, and designed for spped. There is EXISTING LEGISLATION covering careless and reckless operation of all boats. Speed alone is not considered either of these two.
Many bass boats are much faster than the limit in this bill.

7. Residence boats -What is wrong with spending the weekend on the lake? I am at Anchor Bay and NO ONE is living in their cruiser.

8. "Georgia passed legislation enforcing greater building standards on their mobile homes and Alabama seen an influx of sub-standard mobile homes. We don't want people from Georgia running to our lakes with their big boats when they are being banned from the Georgia lakes" -Quote from Senator Dial directly to me on the phone. Where would they put them? In case you are blind, the marinas which support these boats stay full (even with the Ridge expanding). AND from my previous statement, how can you compare a late-model cruiser to a mobile home?

9. Those boats were built for the salt water and offshore -? I don't understand this one. Have you ever been in four to ten foot seas on a 33 foot boat? (Me either) Should we be forced to put our investment in salt water and let it deteriorate because of your opinion?

10. My pontoon boat almost gets capsized when a big boat passes - As with ANY approaching wave, steer into it. If its so dam big you should see it coming.

POSITIVES
1. I can afford a bigger boat and a wet slip, but cannot afford a lake home- Therefore the "option" to own a cruiser WAS a nice one.

2. Honestly, spending the weekends on my boat with my family has brought us closer together (You see, they are not real roomy inside, just cozy)

3. There is nothing like a sunset cruise...

4. I love going out on the lake when the wind is blowing. It doesn't affect me at all!

5. I have always dreamed of owning a big boat. I have been around lakes and boats all my life and now my son cannot share this admiration.

6. I love fresh water and the short drive to the lake, DON'T tell me to move to the Gulf.

Can someone tell me what this has to do with development????

Lifetime Laker, I can not believe how you can not possibly see how "greed" has anything to do with this. I am not going to sit here and create a back and forth agrument that will get us no where, instead... In 5 - 10 years from now, when you can no long see the trees on the shoreline because they are blocked by condos everywhere, maybe you will figure out what was meant by "greed". Oh, dont' forget the emiment domain law... hope you hold on to what is yours. Have a good day.

...but I cant make the connection b/w condos and big boats. Given my choice I would choice a SHORELINE full of condo's over a LAKE full of big, go fast boats. The condo's will be here with or without the ban. Only diference is each one will have a smaller, more approptiate boat.

WHO is going to build these condos? What "out of state" developers are going to come in and snipe land from Russell or APC, two corporations that do a pretty good job of holding on to what they already have?

Oh, I agree, there will be more development, but escalating development on Lake Martin has been a fact of life for 30 years... long before the first ocean cruiser took to the lake. In fact, the condo surge started in the mid-80s, right around the time of the cruiser surge, so to say that big boats keep condos away is ludicrous.

I don't know about the development that caused this bill to come about. But in Stillwaters there at Sunset Point there is a new building going up with a lot of condos that start in the 400's. They are GA developers and from what I understand all of the condos are presold to Georgians.
I don't have a problem with GA people coming here, so please don't misinterpret my post. ( I stay out of arguments on here, but just thought I would throw this in since I knew of an instance)

But you're talking about StillWaters, one of the very few developments not owned by Russell Lands, and one that has been around for 30 years or so. I think it's interesting that StillWaters has been developed, re-developed, re-re-developed, and so on over those 30 years, even though the multiple bankruptcies would lead most to believe that, for whatever reason, StillWaters doesn't "work." So why keep beating that dead horse? Probably because of the reasons I cited: the VAST majority of land surrounding Lake Martin is owned by Russell Lands and Alabama Power... and they don't sell large chucks of it to other developers.

I have no doubt that StillWaters is going to eventually me a blight on the shores (some might say it already is.) But I don't see it spreading, because there is nowhere for it to spread; it is essentially "landlocked." And so, rather than spread, it will continue to eat away at that one relatively small piece of land until it devours itself.

Believe me, I'm no fan of Russell Lands, and I think their developments are abhorrent and unsightly. But I must give them credit for doing it themselves, instead of selling their land to other developers. That is going to go a long way towards slowing rampant developmet. Now if we could just convince them that clear-cutting lots is a bad thing...
