Some time ago, several posters mentioned the magic jack device for long distance telephone use. Well, I bought one based on these posts, and it works just fine! It took about five minutes to set up, and works on all my computers. Sound quality is as good or better than AT&T, both on the receiving end and sending end.

I am expecting mine any day. Can't wait to try it.

Just be sure to let it do all of it's installation before you try to use it. It goes through quite a few usb device installations, and looks like it's doing nothing! It will give you a ready to use notice when it is finished. Also, it says you must receive and respond to an email to continue it's use, but I never received one, so I contacted the company and they said that is not required anymore.

The website says that new area codes are coming November 15th. I hope they have 256 then. If so I will use it as my primary phone. I am sick of crappy cell service. As Clark Howard says, they use contracts to replace customer service. I tried for 3 days last week to get a T-Mobile HUMAN on the phone. All I got was was computers that automatically went to spanish about half the time. I made it 40 years without a cell phone, I think I will try to go another 40 now.

I used Columbus, Georgia for now as my area code, until they make more available (hopefully) after November.

I used 404. All af my family is in ATL. Not that it matters, nobody pays long distance charges any more, well not per call anyway.

The web site indicates that you can only CALL INTO a Majic Jack phone from another Magic Jack phone, but mine accepts calls from other phones, no problem. Just like regular service. Have not found anything wrong with it yet. I use it at the lake for long distance, and only use AT&T for DSL and loacl (have the 5 cent a minute plan for long distance...which is never used).

By the way, Charter internet sucks!!!!!! Always down, and always YOUR problem, never theirs (even when the wire is cut by contractors up the street)!

Just have to leave the computer on!!!!!!

Got one as well, and it's a very cool piece of "bleeding edge" telecom technology. I bought a two year contract ($60) as a show of faith, but the VOIP market is still emerging (Vonage and Skype are not well) and there's some risk that MagicJack will disappear (sorry). That said, there are some VERY nice features to this thing:

1) It's really cheap ($40/yr or $60/two yrs) and works very well with any high-speed internet connection. You do NOT need a separate phone line, but you will need a) a basic phone or b) a PC-compatible headset. I used an old wireless phone with no prob. Setup is a no-brainer.

2) They give you a phone number when you plug the MagicJack into your PC, and you can dial to/recieve calls from that number as long as your PC is plugged in.

3) No monthly/per call/long distance charges to the US/Canada, you only pay the annual fee in advance.

4) International calling reportedly will allow calls from most countries to the US/Canada - haven't tested that yet, but I am accepting travel donations. :)

So you select your own number or one is given to you?

Dont you need DSL to make work? If so, who are you getting DSL from? I could use high speed and free long distance.

Right now, you pick from a few area codes when you activate the unit, and they give you a number. Later on, they will expand these choices.

I use Bellsouth (AT&T) for DSL and local service. Then I use Magic Jack to make long distance calls. You could use Charter for a calbe internet service, but I had nothing but trouble with them for two years. I am in Stillwaters, and we have DSL available. I pay $65 per month for the 3 meg DSL and local service.

Got it today.... Best 45 bucks spent. Clearer than my AT@T cell phone.
