The temporary variance to the rule curve has been in place for two months now. Alabama Power's proposal forecasted that the lake would be above the 484 mark by the end of January. We are about 7.5 feet short so far. Pray for a wet spring.

It looks like Harris is going to have to fill up before much water will be released downstream to us. On a positive note, Harris appears to be filling up much quicker than Martin due to its smaller size. However, that's not saying very much, because Martin has only risen about .3 feet in the last week.

And I might be wrong, but I don’t think Harris’ fill date (or plug date) has arrived yet. Our normal date is around Feb. 18 and Harris’ is April 1, after Martin is normally close to full pool. Martin was allowed to start filling around the middle of January, but I did not read that Harris had been given the same reprieve. We got the shaft last year when they started bringing Harris up early and it appears we are getting it again. For some reason they seem to have more political pull than Martin. Is it because Alabama Power owns and is selling more choice lots on Harris than on Martin. Every lake on the Alabama Power system is above winter pool except Martin and we aren’t even close. This is the main reason I joined HOBO, but looks like we still have no influence.

they keep letting so much water go. I know they have minimum daily flow requirements, but my observation is that on some days the flow is much higher than others. It was almost to 486.7 early this morning, and they have pulled almost an inch (486.59 at this minute). They seem to do this a lot.

What is full pool on Harris Lake?
|
Wedowee is full at 793. They are exactly 7 feet below full pool as of today.

I have noted before, this is FAR more about politics and APCo than about rainfall. In some past years, the lake filled in the Spring when there was not a great deal of rain. They simply controlled the outflow and it filled. It now appears that this lake is NOT going to fill this year--not even close. AND, there is a political answer, not a weather answer. Good luck with HOBO!

I'm not sure what you are referring to as far as releases from Martin Dam. According to their website info and the "800" number info line they have virtually stopped releasing from Martin.
There have been no releases in the last 5 days and none scheduled for the next three. You must remember that the volume of the lake is an exponential function with regards to the surface area of the current pool (i.e. it takes exponentially more water to cause a rise in elevation as the surface area increases).

I've kept my opinions out of this topic for the longest but I agree that is now at least half politics. I mean how much rain do they need. They should inform the public. Do they expect flooding every spring to fill the lake? We will never be able to make up for 2007 so wipe the slate clean.. As long as we are getting on and off showers in and around the riversystem all the way up to Ga. , then let the lakes fill up evenly and normally. I have no problems with APCO but they are letting politics control the situation. Something doesnt pass the smell test here and I hope we get numerous flooding rain storms to see the truth come out.

I see the current state vs state "water wars'" issue as being the biggest player in this shortage of flow. Yes, last years drought is the main cause of the dilemma but I do not know the various agendas of the power companies, governments and water regulators.. I wish we all had more answers. Apparently for now, hope for numerous flooding gully washers...
