My wife and I "inherited" a plastic paddle-boat when we bought our place. It's got some years on it, and it leaks and occupies space in our boathouse we'd much rather devote to something else. We have no interest in salvaging it, we don't have a vehicle to tote it away in though I guess we could borrow one in a pinch, and the darn thing is unsinkable. How would you suggest properly disposing of this thing, assuming we can't find someone who might want to buy (suggested retail price about $0 far as I am concerned) and repair it? Just drag it to the landfill? Or is there a better way?

I was about to suggest posting it to the classifieds as free and noticed someone at Lake Mitchell is looking for a pedal boat. The link below will send you there... Good luck!

This brings back memories for me... Years ago my Dad and I bought a pedal boat for cheap in somewhat disrepair. The floats were thin fiberglass with hairline cracks so we took it home and applied layers of fiberglass cloth and resin... We applied enough additional layers we wondered if we added too much weight that it would sink. When we took it to the lake it floated just fine.

Later, when I was 16 years old, some friends and I ventured out several hundred yards from the pier on the pedal boat and here comes the marine police. They stop and give me a ticket for not having life jackets on board. Having used the padle boat mostly as a swim platform close to the cabin the thought of life jackets never crossed my mind until that incident. Yes... Young and dumb!

Another legal aspect of non-powered vessels in Alabama, I read recently where non-powered vessels require registration. I know we did not have our pedal boat registered at that time but that may not have been required in 1986. I did not get ticketed for no registration... Man, that would have been a double whammy...

Here is what I found about registration:

In Alabama, all mechanically propelled vessels, sailboats, and boats for hire must be registered, but there are a few exceptions to this law:

A vessel operating under a temporary number.
A vessel already covered by a number in full force, such as that of another state, provided the vessel has not been in Alabama more than 90 days.
A vessel temporarily using Alabama waters that is under registry from another country.
A vessel owned by the United States, a single state, a county, or a municipality.
A ship's lifeboat.
A vessel not propelled by machinery except for sailboats and rental boats.
Alabama does not require boat trailers to be licensed and does not have a title law on boats.

Note that a vessel not propelled like a canoe does not require registration.

I suppose the Alabama Marine Patrol will next issue tickets for those on inner tubes who are without life vests.

When I go kayaking on LM I sit on my PFD.

My brother-in-law got a $150.00 ticket this past sunday for kayaking without a lifejacket. Talking about boiling mad! This happened on a creek.

Well, this worked great. A very nice guy came by and picked up a free paddle-boat this weekend -- hope he enjoys it. And I now have some room in my boathouse!
