There was a man who worked for the Post Office whose job was to process all the mail that had illegible addresses.
One day, a letter came addressed in a shaky handwriting to God with no actual address. He thought he should open it to see what it was about.
The letter read:
Dear God,
I am an 83 year old widow, living on a very small pension.
Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had $100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension payment.
Next Sunday is Christmas, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. Can you please help me?

The postal worker was touched.. He showed the letter to all the other workers. Each one dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few dollars.
By the time he made the rounds, he had collected $96, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman..
The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends.
Christmas came and went.
A few days later, another letter came from the same old lady to God.
All the workers gathered around while the letter was opened.
It read:
Dear God,
How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me?
Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful gift.
By the way, there was $4 missing.
I think it might have been those bastards at the post office.

-Saturday AM I went to the post office to mail a Christmas gift to my grand daughter.
-I was walking into the post office at 12 noon, and was stopped by a postal worker who said it was noon and the post office was closing. The postal worker closed the door right in my face.(I know I should have gotten there a lot sooner, but that's another story)
-I said "but it's the Saturday before Christma"
-He said, "Sorry, It's 12 noon. We close at 12 noon on Saturday"
-I said, "Yes, but it's the Saturday beore Christams, and I have to mail this gift today to get it there by Christmas"
-He said, "Sorry, we close at 12" ...and walked away.
-I went to a convenience store, looked in the yellow pages, and got the address of teh local UPS. I called. They said, "Yes, we're open till 8PM tonight ..but if you wish...we'll come pick up your package"
-I went to the UPS store. NOt only were they open, but they had three lines going...AND...a table with cookies, hot cider, and hot chocolate!!!!
-...need i say more about government postal service, government health care, or etc........

I've had similiar experience at the Post Office, but I would be remiss if I didn't stick up for the Post Mistress of the Equality Post Office and my RR postman. It is a joy to go to the Post Office in Equality. The postmistress is so nice, so helpful and she always goes the extra mile. At the end of every transaction, she always says "thank you for mailing with us". My postman, Mr. Shores, is equally wonderful. Always polite, always goes the extra mile. Brings large packages down to my door. One day he left the wrong package at my house, was at the door within 5 minutes, picking it back up.
You can damn the institution, but there are some good people with the post office too. I've seen customers be abusive to the postal employees, screaming and cursing at them. No one should have to put up with that. So maybe there is a reason they don't always cut you the break that you think you deserve.

-Perhaps you misunderstand me; I didn't ask anybody to cut me a break, nor do I expect a break, or think I deserve a break. If they close at noon on teh Saturday before Christmas, and I come at noon, or right after, I recognize it's my fault and i'm up for the consequences.
-However, what I would expect is that the post office might consider being open longer hours for teh Christmas season. Like other businesses, it might make its profit for teh year during the last two months of the year. But the Post Office didn't want to do that.
-Perhaps it could have hired a few laid-off people for the holidays. More money for these people; more business for teh post office; more happy customers.
-But what they did do was drive this customer to a competitor. And they probably did that tens of thougsands of times over the last several weeks.
-Yes, my postal workers are nice and thoughtful too. But so are the UPS people. So should all personnel working with customers. What we shold want the companies we work with to be is effective, efficient, and customer-friendly. We shouldn't feel greatful when they are. We should all expect that.
-Bottom line is that the Postal Office is going broke again because it can't compete effectively. Treating teh holiday season as a normal business season is just plain stupid! Postal Office -RIP

I understand your point. It seems to me that back in the day, the post office did stay open for Christmas shipments and also April 15th.
I think you are right that the Post Office policies are driving people to other places for services. It will not surprise me to see the end of the post office in my lifetime. Between electronics and their competitors, there are a lot of other, more flexible options.

I remember late hours on April 15 and longer hours for Christmas. I assume cutting the hours is their way to cut expenses, However, beleive it does the opposite during the holidays.
As to competiton, try and find a private business that will deliver a letter across country for 44 cents. It is easy to damn them for being inefficient but I am always amazed when I receive a letter on Saturday from San Franciso and Butte, Montana for a lowly 44 cents.

If Yankee had been sending a letter rather than a package how much would he have had to pay UPS or Fed Ex to deliver it? Certainly a lot more than 44 cents. I cuss the PO as much as anybody but admit it is a fine feat to get a letter from Key West to Nome in 3 or 4 days for 44 cents.

-maybe 44 cents is good, maybe not,--but it seems we'll never know.
-I use to deliver mail over the Christmas season while in high school and college. Provided interesting insights into how the government works. At that time Ilearned alot about the post office.
-Did you ever wonder why UPS or FEDEX doesn't compete in the delivery of first class mail? The answer is that the Congress made it illegal to do so. My guess is that if UPS can deliver packages cheaper than teh postal service, it could, if allowed to, deliver letters more cheaply too. Seems logical.
-However, until Congress changes teh law, we'll never know.

in Dadeville. Polite, considerate and helpful beyond any reasonable expectation. That's a people thing; on an institutional level, the US Postal System is failing and operating at a huge deficit. I chalk that up to the inefficiency of govenment running commercial enterprise.. But I'm certain the picture will improve when it takes over 1/6th of the economy and our healthcare..
