-Should kids be going to school on MLK Day to make up for earlier days off because of snow? -As I've often stated before on this forum, I consider myself a political independent. So my approach to this issue is kind of disbelief from the middle. -Since the only states seemingly doing this are Georgia and the Carolinas, some are assuming the decision is one of political conservatives and closet racists. I can see why people would think that. Me?--I think the decision makers are just plain stupid! -There are some arguments about restriction of school rules or policies realtive snow days, etc. None of them very persuasive from my perspective. -But what astounds me is the utter stupidity of such a decision because it should be obvious to any sentient being that such a decision would cuase a political and cultural storm among many communities, certainly among members of school distrcicts where the kids go to school. If I were a black person in those school districts, I believe I would have to view this decision as racist.

I'd agree with you.  They didn't think that one through.

There are most likely many whites who consider the MLK holiday itself to be racist.

you mention Georgia but living in Atlanta I haven't heard of any schools that were planned to be out today being in session due to losing last week.  My kids are home.

Our kids were still out (private Catholic school) today despite missing all last week.  I would say whoever decided to make the kids attend school on MLK day were tone deaf at best.  They should have known this would cause a furor.  I wonder how many extra days they would have to tack onto the end of the year anyway since they already have a few "snow days" in the schedule anyway, right?  I know that MLK day is controversial to some and my only problem was the elimination of the President's Day holiday in most places.  MLK was a controversial figure and an imperfect person but he represents an important voice in the civil rights movement and probably the best person to represent a positive change for our country.

Short story is making this decision was a dumb move..........

Don't know which schools actually had classes today, but the link lists some who were considering it for makeup.

It has become a moot issue as the 3 school districts in N Georgia are closed today as the roads are still frozen. It was a bonehead decision. When I served on a school board, we had one real bad year for snow and exceeded the alloted number of days set aside for make up. We discussed extenting the school year into the summer vacation. Naturally, some parents were upset as their student had a summer job or a vacation planned. We came up with a plan that included some Saturday classes and a few days added on at the end of the school year which resolved the issue.

GF, how many snow days do they usually have in Georgia?  I know when I grew up in SW Penn we had five days.  We only had school closed if we had more than 6 inches of snow and it could not be cleared.  Don't ever remember ice storms though which is a bigger problem here.

I lived in New Jersey when I was elected to the school board. I decided to run on the Saturday before the Tuesday election as a write in candidate. I stood at the entrance to the polling place, handed out a flyer, and won. Since I had no agenda that I campaigned on, I was able to vote as a strong supporter of what was best for the students. My only promise was to serve one term. When my term ended, I went to say goodbye to the Supt. and to wish him well. He made an interesting comment. Of all the board members, I was the only one he could never figure ahead of time if I would or would not support him. I used to meet with students, voted against tenure for some, supported an injunction to force striking teachers back to work, supported the firing of a teacher who was caught with joints in his car, served on the contract renewal committee and suggested a performance bonus where they would receive less in pay but an opportunity to receive more in a bonus. They could not understand that concept of performance bonus.

GF

I would have voted for this school board member and campaigned for him/her. We need to expand this concept and behaviors to to the Legislative and Executive branches.
