Well, my heat pump compressor decided to give up the ghost Saturday. The current system is Lennox but have been considering Trane as well. The system is due to be replaced anyway and would like any recommendations or warnings of local HVAC folks that provide either of these systems. Thanks in advance.

I had Trane for 10 years and the equipment started giving problems after about 7 years. Trane has a knack for using parts that you can only buy from them at outrageous prices--didn't like that little feature. Have Fridigaire now and this outside unit has an eight year replacement warranty. Four years old and no problems at all. Have heard that American Standard is good stuff. Bought my Fridigaire from Tony Guy in AC. Happy.

Have you considered a replacement with a Geothermal system. It will cost more, but in the long run would cut your heating and cooling bills just about in half.

Jerry Kelley at Kelley H/AC just put a new heat pump in my house; I forget the brand but it is not Trane although he has them. The one I bought is less expensive and seems to be working very well.

Agree with Smitty (as I usually do except for his choice of fishing lures and taste in beer.) Done a good deal of work with Jerry and have nothing other than had good experiences.. He priced Trane for us, but we opted for Rudd based on price.. Been a good unit thus far..

Don't use Sunshine Heating and Air. We had a new systewm put in, had problems and he would never come back to fix them or return a call. Go geothermal if it is a house you will keep. When we built our house in Fayetteville, we went geo and love it.

Thanks for the comments. Seems that I may need to do some more research. I've never considered geothermal. As this will be our retirement house when the time comes, I am making long term investments in the house while I have income so that when it drops, I will not need to make large capital improvements. Any pointers or recommended reading? Or is WWW sufficient resource?

Jerry Kelley did a wonderful job on our "full install" heat pump....highly recommended.
