Have you read the Martin Dam license for operation? Do you know that downstream farmers lost an appeal of a suit against AL Power to the AL Supreme Court and the Court stated that the license did not include flood control as a purpose? The power company will retain water when it can, but that is not the purpose of the lake. BTW, the flood gates are open now.

Anybody know how many gates are open?

Per APCO website

Tentative Schedule for Turbine Operation

Date Start Hour Number of Units
3/12/2010 12:00 AM 4
3/13/2010 12:00 AM 4
3/14/2010 12:00 AM 4

The Turbine operation, although maybe high, doesn't have anything to do with what is going through the gates as the gates are an overflow mechanism.

Exactly. My question was about flood gates not turbines.

I figure about 2 gates based on the release of ~23,600 CFS (cubic feet/sec.) ; at close to full pool 4 turbines only (no gates) equates to about 16,000 CFS and if memory serves me each gate is about 4,000 CFS (at close to full pool).

Article on homepage says: (does not state how many though)

Because of this week’s abnormally heavy rains, Alabama Power plans to open spillway gates at Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River today.

I was just curious if anybody had ridden behind the dam on 50 and had a count on spill gates. Just wondering. :)

The article in the Dadeville paper dated today says AP is planning to open one gate.

I pulled up the dam road and parked by the dam fence. I saw one dam flood gate opened.
