What are forum members thoughts on the eyesore that the Covention Center has turned into? Does anyone care about this abandoned but privately owned property??

Capt D, I was by there this past weekend and didn't see anything different about the place. I heard it was going to be torn down, but it still looked in good shape. Was it not up to your standards? That is why I don't have a place in Still waters. I don't want to have my neighbors getting all jacked out of shape if I forget to mow the lawn one weekend.

shirt--You've got it wrong!!! The grass hasn't been cut since it was auctioned off in 2003, 6-8 construction trailors for Harbor Pointe condos are parked, plus ANYBODY who wants to park their boat/trailor! Has anyone seen how the floating dock is detached, only being held to land by a rope? This is an accident waiting to happen.........

The owners of the convention center property also created the eyesore on the point that is now nearly filled with wel landscaped condos. Surely their business plan calls for the demolition of the convention center. You don't need three guesses as to what will be constructed there. They have been very busy spendng money and will probably get around to the demo in the not too distant future. Unless they decide to begin construction of the next series of condos on the shoreline immediately east of the center.

The owners of Harbor Pointe DO NOT own the old conference center. Action is being taken to have their construction trailers and the boat trailers removed from the private property as they are in violation of the covenants of StillWaters. I'm sure you can purchase the property and "fix it up" if the price is right.

they don't own it presently. The real owner wanted to tear it down to put up a highrise condo. The Residential Association acted quickly to limit the number of stories that can be built on the resort's grounds. So if the present owner doesnt feel that it is economically appealing to build what the condos are limited to, in height, who is going to buy it? The owners of Harbor Pointe have proven that they can get a good ROI with shorter buildings. No matter who owns the property condos are destined for that location. Sooner rather than later.

Since you still don't have it right, here's the REAL story. The Harbor Pointe folks were in final negotiations to purchase the property and build a proposed 12 story high rise condo building. During the acquisition process, it was determined that Alabama Power actually OWNS the first 30 feet of that particular property on the lake frontage. Therefore, the property is far less appealing to a potential buyer and the Harbor Pointe deal fell through (they backed out of it). The blown deal had nothing to do with the StillWaters Residential Association's proposed limits on construction height. The owner of the property does not seem interested in further development, so there it sits. Hope this info satisfies your inquisitive mind.

Not to dispute anything you have said, jd, but just wondering if the 30 feet
that you are referring to is not the 30 foot building setback line that APCO
requires on much (if not all) of the shoreline property........

Not in this case, BigFoot. It seems that somehow in the trading of property years ago, Alabama Power retained the first 30 feet of actual land from the water on that lot. Therefore the lot is actually water view instead of water front. Apparently, the lawyers had a field day when they dug far enough back to discover this interesting fact.
