A very pretty homing or racing pigeon has settled down at a particular location in Tecumseh Point area of the lake. The pigeon seems tried or injured as it does not want to take flight. If anyone knows of homing pigeon owners in this area please respond. It has identifying bands on both legs.I realize the owner could be 100's of miles away but this is a start.I'll attempt to post to a homing pigeon site.

I am posting a link to another homing pigeon thread in this forum (3 or 4 years http://www.lakesonline.com/Forum/show.asp?id=115581&fid=6EB63121-22CA-4F54-A718-45B4048F320B&tid=0&SiteID=AL001

I made two post to national sites . I have had no inquires yet. I do now have the identification numbers if an owner would just respond. I have learned more in 30 minutes of reading about homing pigeons  than I ever knew about these birds. In World War 1 they carried messages and orders, they have been used to deliver medicine as they  can fly with 2.5 ounces on their back, and the training of the pigeons is quite a feat.  I had an old cage that I activated. Took the bird  into work hoping to leave with a avian vet but it did not work out. So- I have have fed it and provided water and that's all I can do for now.

By using the banding number I have found that this bird is a racing pigeon belonging to a club out of Columbus Georgia. I have emailed the club president and maybe now there will be a good ending.

Through about one  hours research I found that the bird was resistered to a racing club out of Columbus Georgia. I found the club's director and he said the birds were released in Evansville,Indiana  400 miles away on Saturday morning. They raced into Alabama and ran into the heavy rains on Sunday. This caused them to become disoriented and threw them off their instinctive route home .The bird settled down here. I am making plans now to get it to its owner.

I think you are going to get the "Twinkletoes Award" for going above and beyond on getting this bird back to where it belongs. A great big pat on the back!

10toLife...Chance is now Jack. We had a family "Name the New Dog" contest and my 6 year old granddaughter won and got to name him. Jack is doing great after a visit to the vet for the works. He's in great shape and the family and neighborhood (Sandy Creek) loves him. He's coming along very well with his training program. I let the 12 hens out yesterday and he worked well with keeping the girls within a safe distance from the coop. He learned early that when he does the right thing with his training program, he gets lots of treats. I'm so thankful that he showed up at Twinkletoes and she posted on the fourm regarding a new home for Jack. And a special "Thank You" for asking about Jack.

Hi Maddog,

Glad to hear that Jack's "works" went well and he's happy in his new neighborhood. I've been so busy lately I hadn't been on the forum and didn't read about the homing pigeon until this morning. I haven't found any loose boats or lost pets lately, thank goodness. If the weather is nicer later in the week maybe Lefty and I can come for a visit to see the new and improved Jack! Hope you and your family had a good time at the beach.
