This past week two wonderful people have posted trying to help an owner recover their lost dog.... Alahusker and AC KT. As an animal lover, I sometimes wonder if someone allows their dog to roam without a collar do they really deserve to own the dog.

If you do have a dog that you love, please for heavens sake either keep a collar on it with the rabies tag that has the VETS telephone number of buy a tag at Wal Mart for a few dollars. I suggest on the tag your last name and telphone number. No need to include dog's name cause it makes it easier for someone to call it and steal it.

Agree, although dogs do slip their collar at times, one that is a proper fit should not come off that easily. P.C.'s suggestion about a chip is a great idea to have done as well. We have taught our furry family member the boundaries of the yard at the cabin, and the unfenced portion of the yard at the house - she is very good about observing them.

Amen. This is a very sweet dog that obviously has had a family at some point. It seems well groomed but was quite hungry which breaks my heart. It deserves a good home but I cannont keep two dogs. Let me know if someone is interested in adopting, I will deliver!

Hope that you carry the dog to the humane shelter or a vet to see if it's been microchipped or been reported missing. Since you found it in your neighborhood it's not likely that someone just abandoned the dog.

Another option for dogs that wander are electronic fences. We don't have one here, but we did at our last home and it worked great.

Lots of lost dogs are not lost, but dumped by people that don't want to deal with them. Last one I had (Daisey) was dumped, according to locals. Gave me and my family 8 years of joy, including grand kids. Have never been billed from my vet, Dr. Gavin, for her final trip in my truck, several years hence.

My current dog, after 5 days in the family, is pretty cool.. According to my daughter, DVM, 6 - 8 month old rottie/shepard mix. Loves kids, good with obedience training, first ride in the truck yesterday and boat ride tonight.. Smart, but slow to pick up on her name, "showuponthedeckdog." Should have named her "Daiseytwo?"

Be careful with name taqs and even rabies tags that "dangle" from the collar. Had a German Shepard one time with a tag from her collar. We were approaching the dock after a boat ride and she was waiting on the dock as always. When she jumped up to greet us, the tag was lodged between the dock planks. She did a complete flip and fell off the edge of the dock with the collar still caught in the dock and around her neck. Had it not been for the quick reaction of a boat passenger who jumped in and saved her, she would have drowned, suffocated, or broken her neck very quickly.

What are the odds? 90% of dogs with no tags don't come home. If you don't care enough to tag your dog you don't need a dog. Another thing that mystifies me is people getting a dog and then putting it in a pen away from the house. Then the owners wonder why the dogs get weird or mean. Dogs are pack animals and have to be around the pack. Keeping one alone and away from the pack is cruel. If this is what you want to do please get a goldfish instead.
