CONGRATULATIONS TO US ALL - OUR POWER COMPANY IS GOING TO MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS FOR US BASED ON THE COLOR OF PEOPLE'S SKIN.
This DIRECTLY taken from page 12 of Southern Company's 2023 Proxy Statement: (I have added emphasis to SC's DEI statements.)
Our Commitment to Equity
Over the past three years, we have made great strides in advancing our Moving to Equity work. While diversity, equity and inclusion has been a longstanding part of Our Values, we vowed in 2020 to be more intentional and move boldly forward inour actions.
Our five pillars include:
Talent: Our commitment is to increase and improve outreach, recruitment, hiring and retention of diverse talent; help ensure equity in leadership development programs; and maintain diverse candidate slates for leadership roles
Work Environment: We are committed to promoting an actively anti-racist culture and helping ensure all groups are well-represented, included and fairly treated. We want everyone to feel welcomed, valued, respected and heard
Civic Engagement: We are committed to leveraging our influence to address inequity and systemic racism within society and will make political and policy decisions using a consistent process that incorporates Our Values like unquestionable trust and total commitment
Supplier Inclusion: We have a goal to increase total diverse spending to 30% by 2025 and to do business with more diverse companies in our industry and communities
Community Investment and Social Justice: We and our foundations have pledged $225 million through 2025 to advance equity and social justice in our communities. We have aligned our volunteer, giving and community investment strategies to four key areas: education equity, criminal justice equity, economic empowerment and energy empowerment

Whatever happened to hiring the most qualified people to produce electric power REGARDLESS OF THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN?

While not explicitly stated, I would hope that they mean that when all things are equal, they will go with diversity.
Look to see a lot of companies issue these kinds of statements. It's keeping with the political climate and the cultural expectations cycle we are in right now.
Also keep in mind, it is one thing to state, it's another thing to practice it.

Equality and equity ARE NOT THE SAME!
I firmly believe that race and gender MUST not be entered on an application form… that equity is a time-bomb ticking from the moment of hire.
I am prejudiced against fat people. YET, in my years (after the military) in the civilian work force, my best hire and most dependable worker was a fat guy with a high school diploma… a former underground coal miner. He became a field supervisor.
My combat engineer company was the first to receive female soldiers. I never had one instance of trouble with them. One was an Engineer Officer from Colorado School of Mines. The other was a bucket loader operator with a high school diploma.
A black staff sergeant from the Bronx was my operations sergeant. His language skills were terrible. He ran EVERYTHING in the field like Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops. We NEVER failed a mission. Keep in mind the Army did not do equity in the 80s.
I have had several degreed geophysicists come to work for me… who didn’t know the difference between mean, median, and mode. But the fat guy from Giles County, Virginia did understand.
Our cultures – white, black, etc – have changed. Hedonism, laziness, and unreliability have taken over. We have raised a generation of (mostly) godless, historically ignorant, unpatriotic, self-indulgent, and severely dependent, shallow thinkers.
Who will turn this around? How did it get this way?
“Oh the foes will rise with the sleep still in their eyes,
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreamin',
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal and they'll know that it's for real,
The hour that the ship comes in.
"Then they'll raise their hands sayin', 'We'll meet all your demands,
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered,'
And like pharaohs tribe they'll be drowned in the tide,
And like Goliath, they'll be conquered.”
- - Bob Dylan, 1964

Wait until they set your rates based on skin color. Think I'm kidding? Biden is now going to charge people with high credit scores a 1% surcharge on their mortgage and give the money to people with poor credit scores. Our country is insane and unless we change course it will not be recognizable in 10 years.

Yes… but, the Europeans are farther along in their pain. They gave up on their coal. They agreed to buy natural gas from their closest enemy. They squandered their faith on the fickleness of the wind. France is somewhat mitigated by the fact that they have more nuclear power.
But, most Americans don’t think any of this applies to us.
All of the ESG that woke companies can bring to bear on their virtue mongering, will not change the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, will not halt the natural forces of the universe, will not revise the laws of physics and thermodynamics, and cannot discount the theory of Uniformitarianism. We will lose our freedoms because we are still sleeping. Our poor will learn more about being destitute. And the rich elite, basking in the New World Order will pinch themselves and squeal, because they know they made it real… on the hour that OUR ship comes in.
OH! Didn’t I tell you? Southern Company, on page 13 of their 2023 Proxy Statement explains how they will embrace ESG.

I lived though the equity this both as a beneficierie (being a woman) and as a manager when you had to justify why you didn't hire a black . Also lived with one where you had to justify not hiring a veteran. In a way, the veteran thing was the hardest, because they were being referred for jobs that some of them weren't even remotely qualified for - and it was hard on them because they were getting rejected, because at the end of the day, rejection is still a rejection.
Just because you get an opportunity doesn't mean that you will excel. It doens't mean that you will be accepted by your peers. All the politiicans, like Biden, care about are the numbers that they can tout as proof of their "success". They don't care how it really works. I suspect that companies are being subtly threatend by regulators to embrace these policies so they put them out in their mission statements. But you can't legislate people's behavior.
On the other hand, maybe some good will come of it. We need to become a more tolerant society from where we have been in the past. I had no experience with black people when I was growing up. But when I worked for the Army, the organization I worked for was mostly black and I found out that a lot of fears that I had about black people were unfounded. I worked with a lot of gay people - had never seen a gay person before I was working with some. I suspect if I was still working, I would be exposed to trans people, non-binary people and the rest of which, beyond gay I really don't understand.
You say you hate people that are overweight. That must be really hard for you living in Alabama, where the population is mostly overweight. I myself am overweight, despite adhereing to a healthy diet and regular exercise (I have a personal trainder), but I take 3 medications that cause weight gain. I'm fit, I'm healthy but I still would not pass your bias. I can live with that. But I know you are a writer so do you refuse the royalties that come from your overweight readers?

HOUND!
“You say you hate people that are overweight.” (your words to me)
I just re-read my post. I don’t see anywhere in that post where I said I hate overweight people. I did see where I learned my lesson about that prejudice.
I do not discriminate based on skin color, gender, or gender identification. I am an observer of culture (mine included). My EXPERIENCES tell me that there are certain character traits which warrant consideration. You can read those traits in the (former) Boy Scouts of America “Scout Law.” Not one of them mentions skin color, gender, or gender identification.
Those “Scout Laws” have guided me in my professional and social affairs.
The fat guy from Giles County is still my friend. And, I hold him in the highest regard. His obesity condition has caught up with him in retirement and his health is failing. I do wish I was still working his ass off in the field. When he is gone… I will go onto my back deck and slam down a whole shot of our favorite Bourbon.
* * * * *
Yes! I have (as have you) worked with good folks of all races, heritage, and sexual orientation. But… you and I have the wisdom to temper our prejudices and brush them aside. Yet, in our time, we endure political parties, social activists, and wealthy intellectual elites who would… for the purpose of self-aggrandizement… exploit the apprehensions of diverse cultures to divide and enslave us.
We are sages on a mountain-top… waiting for our scion… who lack both the fortitude to seek us - and the awareness to do so.
