For out of state boaters( this means you reside out of state and have an out of state drivers license) , if you spend less than 45 days boating in alabama per year , you DO NOT need a boating license ( even if your boat is registered in Alabama). I personally checked with the marine police to clarify this. Last year feb got his license, but probably that was not necessary. several posters later inquired about it ,but we never got a straight answer, so there you have it.

But why wouldn't you do the responsible thing and get a non-resident license anyway? It is only $15 and can be done online. That way there is no debate about being legal. The test is more on SAFETY than the "rules of the road", so anybody will benefit from the test.

I would also bet that if you get stopped by the "fun police", you would get a lot less hassle if you can whip out that license, rather than starting to explain how you are here less than 45 days, but choose to register your boat in Alabama.

I personally think that if you are driving a boat registered to you in Alabama you should have to have a license, no matter where your state of residence is, or how many times a year you operate it. But that is just my opinion.

I have an odd question for the board. I had an Alabama driver's license about 5 years ago, before I moved to Georgia, with the vessel endorsement. I am about to move back to Alabama. Will I need to take this test over again? I sure hope not.

I actually have taken a boating saftey course (boatus.com) and I'm a very safe boater. I really wouldn't mind getting the alabama license, but it's hard to get down there on the two days a week that they do that ( I believe it's tuesday and thursday in Dadeville) . I was in the process of trying to get down there and get a license when I was told I didn't have to by the clerk at the dadeville courthouse. I appreciated the inf so I thought I'd just pass it along to save someone the trouble.

Yes Rickiray, We on the Forum now collectively know more about this subject than we did last year. Rickiray is correct based upon what we have learned. A few quick points - There is an age limit where you can be grandfathered and do not have to take the test. I agree with Surfer that it is probably wise to take the on-line course anyway. If you decide to obtain the license make sure you have your social security card with you. Go to the DMV office first and not to the county building. It is a minor hassle and does cost a few bucks. The license is good for four years, and I think it is $5.00 to renew.

How they police the 45 day rule is still a curiosity to me. Maybe is is based on the honor system, and you not lying to the marine police???

Aside - I hope the officer (I think his handle was Gary) from the Marine Police participates on the Forum again this year. He was most helpful to all of us on matters of law and safety.

If you live out-of-state, I would presume that it would be quite difficult to spend more than 45 days boating on Lake Martin.

You DO NOT have to go any further than your computer to get the license. You can take the test ONLINE and your license will be mailed to you.

At the site you can take a practice test for free as many times as you like. Once you feel confident, jsut pay the $15 and take the test for real. If you pass a certificate is mailed to you. You take THAT to the courthouse, they snap a pic, and in a couple of weeks, you get your license. There are no certain days to go using this method. They will take the photo any day of the week. You do not have to take the test there.

The only drawback is, once you pay and take the test, pass or fail they get the money. If you fail, you have to pay to take the test again. But that is true even if you go to the courthouse.

...if you do one simple computer task.
Take the practice test just to see what you know.
Then, it gives you the answers you miss.
Leave that window open.
***Open another to take the real test.***
When you get to a question you don't know, open the practice window...voila!
Yeah, this may be called cheating, but if you do it this way, you learn what you didn't know, instead of missing some and just getting your certification. What would you rather for safety?
I learned more this way than just taking the test.
Very insightful, it was.

Never thought of that. Of course the questions change from test to test, but you could leave as many open windows as you want. Eventually you would have all the questions from the database.

...and got an 80 going in blind to the practice test...missed 4 of them.
And those were about channel markers, of which I've never run into on Alabama water ways whilst driving a boat.
I think the questions are pretty much the same material, just re-worded.

it is true as FEB states below...BUT...if the test is taken and passed then your boat insurance gets a 10% discount...which shd pay for the license...I was grandfathered but still took the course and tested.
