I figured there might be someone here who could help me out on this.. :)

In early June I bought a new (to me) boat in Texas. It has Texas tags and registration. I was wondering how soon I needed to get AL tags. Before these Texas tags expire? ASAP? 30 days? Anyone know....

If anyone has an idea let me know here, or give me a shout-out at the Rock, You can't miss us... '96 Baja with TX's tags...... heh

TYVM!!

I'm not positive but I think if you are an Alabama resident you have something like 10 days from the date of purchase or you pay a penalty. You'll also have to pay sales tax on it. Don't think the penalty is much though. The real pain is changing the decals on the boat.

We got a ticket for not having changed registration (used boat) in three days, I think. It has been awhile, I forget. We don't know about new boats--never had one. Call the Tallapoosa (Dadeville) Courthouse tax office for better information. Then, will you post what you find out? Thanks, and have a fun summer.

I think i'll ride over to the court house in Wetumpka on my way up tomorrow, and let them point me in the right direction. Sounds like I need to get it changed soon.... if the period is as short as you think. I'll let you know what I find out.

If it helps, you can register a boat in any county - not just the one the boat is located in.

A friend of ours has property on the lake but residence is in another county. He bought a used waverunner and was told at the Tallapoosa Co. courthouse he would have to register it in the county his residence is in. They told him next year he could renew it in Tallapoosa Co. Has something to do with having to pay those sales tax. Not stating it as fact, it's just what I was told by this individual. Might want to check it out.

That may be true - I purchased my boat down in gulf shores and registered it down in Foley. The next year I renewed in Shelby.

I work for a boat dealership. If it is a used boat or water craft there is no grace period. a new boat has ten working days. you can register new or used in any county in the state of Alabama as the registration is only state. we do this service for customers all the time.
