In a recent post, Carnac mentioned an account with funds that was used to put out hazard bouys. What does this refer to? I assumed all the open water bouys had been placed by the Marine Police.

the two "no wake" bouys in our slough were privately funded. But still had to be approved by the Marine Police.

Not 100% sure about the open water bouys

All "open water" buoys on the lake, and there are a lot of them, are placed and maintained by hard working volunteers, not the Marine Police or any other State agency. These volunteers work with the Marine Police to help identify certain hazards on the lake, GPS them, and then use their own equipment (boats, tools, etc.) and time to make the necessary installations or repairs. The funds for the buoys are generated by the Lake Martin Resource Association, founded by Ben Russell (866/329-0835). If you happen to see these volunteers out working, offer them a kind word, as they are trying to make our Lake safer for everyone. We would also appreciate your boating courtesy while we are working....rough wakes and "fly-bys" sure make the job more difficult. Finally, let others know that the buoys were not a "gift" from the State and do not simply "come with the Lake", and maybe more people will understand what it takes to make Lake Martin the treasure that it is.

Thanks for the info and great work. Question: What is the criteria for placing a NO WAKE or SWIMMING AREA buoy?

It is probably not best described as criteria. It's actually a subjective process and the decision is at the discretion of the Marine Police. In my past experience as a placement volunteer working with the MP, they would allow a hazard buoy in or in close proximity to normally used channels. Perhaps at 475' mean sea level or higher which is 15 feet or less below full pool. It is highly unlikely that a hazard buoy would be approved for an area where the MP feel that boaters would be foolish to travel near. Common sense suggests that shallow water lies, for some distance, near a point. Call the MP at their Wind Creek office if you have any questions or suggestions. One of the MP's may eventually provide remarks in this string.

Swimming buoys are a "whole nother" matter. They are frowned upon.

Subjective iis a good word for trying to get a buoy placed; we were told it is nearly impossible to get a new no wake buoy placed unless you knew someone with pull........

BTW - the buoy that is normally in place to the right of the slough when entering Anchor Bay is no longer in place and there is a very big boulder right under the surface of the water. beware....

Unfortunately, I have people come by my pier who do not have common sense or courtesy. As a result, I called the Marine Police to ask about swim area buoys. The response was, you can place swim are buoys 20' beyond your pier and parallel to your shoreline, ending at your property lines.
