I am reposting my response since it is several days behind the string. I think it is important for Jim to see this. "It has taken me some time to calm down enough to reply to your last entry. I am a veteran and was a "volunteer" from 1961 to 1965. Quite frankly, I have wished that I had reenlisted since the day that I got out. I possibly could have done more. Your comments of anyone volunteering needs a mental evaulation is absolutely disgusting! Your obvious self pity for being drafted and interrupting your life at that time is deplorable, to say the least. You owe an apology to all military personnel for their service to preserve your freedom. It is not the "volunteers" that need a mental evaluation...that would be you! If we ever have an attack on U.S. soil and you need help, please let me know. I'll be happy to step around you to get to someone who does! "

Kingfish, read the speech by a old retired military officer regarding sheep, wolves and sheep dogs. It is rather long speech, but puts things (and people) into proper perspective.

Thanks pford. I have been there and very scared. I do not know how many will ever know the fear and sickness you feel in the sitatution and sometimes continued day to day facing of the fear. Killing causes you not to sleep, and the next day brings greater danger, because you are actually a sheep in sheep dog's clothing and not alert from the previous day's slaughter That is my take on it . I am a Chameleoon., I like many others still suffer. There are so many others in our society after battle who will still sufffer and their loved ones will never understand.

Thank you so much, Feb. It is hard to do what you have been asked, especially when your actions require taking another life, even when it is to protect your own. Most will never understand that. Hopefully, most never will have to. I just would like for people to understand the sacrifice our people have gone through and show some appreciation for our people in uniform. God bless.

In Jim's defense, may I remind those of you that were not subject to the draft, you cannot understand the impact it had on your life's plans. Being drafted was a life altering experience to many. People got drafted, got married to avoid the draft, had children to avoid the draft, tried to get declared 4F to avoid the draft, went to Canada, etc.
When I came up they were drafting marrieds, students--the Marines were even drafting. Personally, I chose ROTC to avoid "the draft"--spent four years on active duty--saw Europe and that famous part of Asia, and have no regrets---BUT I understand Jim's point of view.

You know I don't think anyone could have said it any better! I was never in the service but every time I see or have a chance I thank a service man or woman I do. We as a nation owe them more than we can ever repay!!!!!!!

I've never been in the service but respect everyone that has , they fought for us and should be held on a little higher level than the rest of us.Thank you for all you've done.

God bless, Scarab Man and all of you who have responded so positively. Your appreciation and thoughts are very genuine and honest. It is most heart warming. We must all remember that the thanks really goes to those people that didn't come back, especially to their families. I say again, God bless and keep that flag flying high.

Just got back from Washington D.C.
If that town doesn't make you feel patriotic, well, one just doesn't have a heart.
All the memorials - Vietnam, WWII, Holocaust, etc.
Somber.
Moving.
Proud.

I hope you and the famliy had a great trip to Washington. I have been several times and enjoyed every visit. It is hard and very soul searching to see the memorials and history, especially Arlington Cemetary. I have a lot of friends on that wall at the Vietnam Memorial. Quite frankly, I am proud to have known every one of them. I wish more of our population would take to the time to see the memorials. They might better understand what it means to live in the free society that we enjoy every day. God bless

Last year, I actually took the 25 cent bus tour of Montgomery, Alabama.
Not as spectacular as the tour of our National Captital, but every bit (two bits) as refreshing.
Yes, I know a few of the names on the Wall. Held a couple in my arms.
