They don't have a very impressive 3 & 0 start....but they are 3 & 0. They actually showed some signs of coming together about 1/2 way into the 3rd quarter. I think all of the disiplinary measures are complete. We should be at full strength for Arkanas.
Great to see a little depth and see some 2nd strings/backups get some playing time.

Criticize all you want…many are. Dealing with 18 – 23 year old human males can be quite a challenge and there is no one answer. Shula doesn’t have children that age so he will have to learn as he goes like the rest of us have to. Keep in mind that he also has some very senior coaches with input as to what’s best for the kids and the team.
Seven players violated team rules after the end of the season and before the start of fall practice in early August. Shula suspended the seven in the order that they broke the rules…2 for Hawaii, 2 for Vanderbilt and 3 for LM.
As I recall, two players did not return to the team this year at all. The disciplinary measures he takes is his and his coaches prerogative. These kids are also required to do community service in many cases such as working with needy kids.

I am a Bama fan. I am really not inclined to listen to judgement from other fans of SEC teams because there is not anyone who can get on the "high horse" anywhere, Bama included. That being said, I am dissapointed on the Juwan Simpson matter. He should have paid a bigger penalty due to the fact that he is a known quantity, a senior and was highly visible to the fans and the community. I do not care if it cost us a victory or two, the residual effect of what the message sends to existing and future players is invaluable. Bama (Shula) blew it.
We will pay later in respect and recruiting. Mama wants her children to behave and Mama wants a coach who will tow the line and be like Daddy. And in Bama, Daddy is gonna whup some @$$ if junior gets out of line.........Bear knew that better than anyone.

Maybe Shula sould have handled the press differently but he handled the player(s) on an individual basis. In case you were not aware, Jawan had more penalties.

Don't you think it's a bit disingenuous to applaud the head coach for penalties that he had nothing to do with?
From the article you linked: “The only way we will take somebody [in the jail’s community service program] is with a court order, which came from Jefferson County in this case," Sexton said.
From the same article: Sexton said he had not spoken with Crimson Tide head coach Mike Shula about Simpson’s case
As for the "punishment": “We had him washing cars, cutting the grass, picking up trash and doing other manual labor details," Sexton said. (Who knew that I've been being punished for all these years? I'll never be able to wash my car, cut the grass, pick up trash or anything else along those lines without feeling guilty for doing... I don't know what, but it must have been something bad.)

You're right. What the courts do and what the coach does are 2 different things. I think the coach initiated the working with the kids. Maybe you are also correct in viewing the punishment as too lenient. But if the courts, a judge, a coach or a parent can show a kid that what he did was wrong and convence him that the consequences are great and that you will lose what you value and have worked for for years if you continue the behavior, then maybe ...just maybe it is the right thing for the kid.

I'm certainly no football expert, but it seems to me, that considering what Alabama has been through, the program has turned the corner. They have really improved the facilities, they are close to being back to full strength in numbers and have more stability today than they have had in many years. It will likely take a few more years to build quality strength in numbers.

But i'm going to anyway. Auburn's players who are in trouble have not played in any games. Even LSU, when we needed our star defensive players to most.
tubby showed that he doesn't tolerate BS from his players. nor did bear.. Shula needs to get his priorities straight. He may have won the games, but he sent a bad message.

He suspended 7 players from 3 different games. I guess you would like to have seen him suspend all seven from the Auburn game...or maybe for each offense you would like to see them chop off a digit starting with the left hand.

Let me remind you all of something before we bash only Mike Shula. I seem to remember a grades scandal in Auburn about a month or two ago. The University investigated and somehow kept the NCAA out of the matter and determined that independant studies would be ended indefinitely because of grades being given to students, mostly student athletes. I don't seem to remember Tubby sitting a single player out for involvement in this incident. What message does this send to our kids?

Quick fact-check for you:
"The University investigated and somehow kept the NCAA out of the matter"-- Why would the NCAA be involved, unless it was determined that student-athletes were being given benefits not available to other students? Since only a small percentage of those involved were athletes (and and even smaller percentage football players) it wasn't an athletics problem; it was an academic problem.
"determined that independant studies would be ended indefinitely because of grades being given to students, mostly student athletes."-- I addressed your "mostly student athletes" mistake above. As for your claim that IS courses would be ended, you couldn't be more wrong. The IS program is alive and well; it is just being monitored more closely. (This should have been done long ago.) Professors are now limited in the number of IS courses they can offer, and the classes muct be approved. And before you get back on your high horse, you'd better check to make sure that YOUR school-- be it Alabama, Georgia, or someone else-- doesn't offer Independent Study courses. Here's a clue: they do.
" I don't seem to remember Tubby sitting a single player out for involvement in this incident."-- Despite what the newspapers want you to think, this incident occurred in 2004; the professor who had been teaching too many classes cut back the number LAST year. In other words, it was old news already when the New York Times "broke" the story. Any suspensions would have been handed out then (assuming the coaches knew about it, which they apparently did not), or would involve many players who have since graduated.

longtimer...I think you've hit on something. The newspapers need stories. The sports talk shows need something to talk about. Given the size and scope of all these universities and the human factor, not to mention the young people who are the majority in these schools, there are plenty of stories. The news and talk shows live to find out someone broke curfew or did somthing or anything. Life happens and the teachers and coaches have to deal with it all.
Most of us have no real knowledge of the facts and the circumstances of most of the things that go on. If a coach or teach learns of something going on that's not right it is up to him/her to address it according to the facts presented to them.
