I am sure many of you are boating this weekend. Enjoy the warm weather! Please, make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment on board. Fire extinguishers sometimes leak down over time. Check them! Life jackets become brittle/old and ineffective. If you need new ones go get some. Is your registration current and on board? Is your kill switch operable? (And not wearing it is like driving around in your car without a seat belt). Is the general condition of your boat safe? (Steering, cables, special equipment, etc.) If not, have it repaired. If your engine is too loud, put your mufflers on, if you don’t have any get some. Does your lights work?—Check them! Have you done your general service/maintenance? (Nobody hates a tow in more that the one having to do the towing). Make this a great and safe summer… Happy and safe boating to all!

Agree - we saw him flying/roaring up the river going past Pleasure Point! The noise is really bad!

Lets save the missile launcher for more serious business. The .50 cal should work just fine. Don't forget to lead just a hair aiming at the water line and wear hearing protection while firing. Next time, just meet them at the boat ramp. Bet it did not reside on the Lake. I guess it could be a new boat??? If it is out again tomorrow (Sunday), then it may reside on the Lake. The Water Patrol will catch up with em.

Remember a good sniper using a .50 cal with a willie peter round can strike the grenade head of an RPG and take out the bearer and about 6 other terrorist in the vicinity when it explodes.

Jlazc can tell you better than I. I do believe there are some rather strict laws on aircraft particularly in landing paths.

I have been pretty close to several small planes taking off and landing on the Lake. They were not too noisy from what I could detect.

Of course, I am deaf in one ear and can not hear out of the other one. The reason I suffer from hearing loss is a direct result of loud noises. So there is a reason for concern other than just peace and tranquility. Folks should not have to wear ear plugs just because they visit or live on the Lake.

Hey, Feb. Thanks for putting me in contact with your builder. I met him a couple of weekends ago to talk about what I would like to do. He and his son showed me the plans for your brother's house. Both yours and his are much grander than what I have in mind, but they certainly look wonderful. I don't know who I will ultimately use - your guy's ball park estimate went up $25 per s.f. in the week's time between when I called him and when he came by with his son. But I do thank you for your referral. It is so beautiful right now - I hope to be at the lake this weekend. We are getting ready to close our deal so I don't know how much longer I will have to enjoy my little house before they demolish it. Guess now I will be looking for a unit to store my house contents, pending building my own...

Hi Harborcon, If I were you, I would go with the builder you are happiest with during your interviews. A $25.00 per sq.ft. increase in a week is more than just a sizable jump. It would cause me to check some other sources.

I also had to rent a climate controlled storage unit a couple of months ago. I checked the place on 280 in Alex City first, and they had no vacancies. I did end up renting a place on 63 by the name of "Nails". They do have some large units.

Maybe others will have some thoughts for you on storage places unless you already have a place in mind.

Email me on your progress if you don't mind.

Glad to keep you updated. Maybe we need a separate forum just for those of us building on the lake! Some really computer-literate person could create bar charts to mark our progress... I have seen some storage units along Hwy 50, but they may be for boats. I think I'll check with Oskar this weekend; she seems to have her ear to the ground about most things...

Harborcon
Pardon my asking, but are you building or getting ready to build? I assume from above, you may have a small cabin, are going to tear it down and build new. Someone was asking about plans a while back and I wondered if it might be you.

It is I, and I will be building from scratch. And thank you for asking - I need all the input I can get! The property is approximately 250' along the lakefront by approximately 350' up a gently sloping terrain. There is a 1950's Jim Walters cabin on the property, which will be demolished. Four new lots will be established along the lakefront and I will build above those lots, at a higher elevation, so I will - hopefully - still maintain my view of the lake. This is where I will probably retire to in 5 to 10 years, so I am looking for plans that include a main level bedroom, with a couple more bedrooms in either a loft or an upstairs location, probably no more than 1250 s.f. total. I'm not looking to build the Taj Mahal, but neither do the neighbors want to see a lean-to.. Have looked at hundreds of plans on-line and found a few there as well as in a couple of books. I need a house plan, I'm told, and either a builder or a general contractor. My inexperience in building is the biggest drawback. Builder or contractor? Choose my own subs? I don't know any... Any and all suggestions, names, numbers, etc., are welcome.
