Subject:   The boat Ban Law Question for Capt. Brooks
Date:   6/11/2013 3:54:56 PM

How is it that a 2013 model Sea Ray 370 that is 37 feet long can be docked at the Ridge Marina in the water. When there is a boat ban law still in effect.

It has bow and stern thrusters, and is only 12' long...  It does happen to be 37' wide though - and there is no limit on a boat's width.

I think the law grandfathered larger boats that were on the lake and boats that Russell Marine had in inventory at the time, but a 2013 boat being grandfathered?

Russell at the time, bought all the stock boats, Sea Ray had for that very reason. The boat in question is a 2013 a good 6 years after the ban was put in placed, not only to mention this is the very first year for this type of boat to be built by Sea Ray.

The boat is banned, unless there's Russell somewhere in your company's name.  This will be interesting to say the least.

3 Types Of Boats Now Banned On Lake Martin

Thanks for taking the time to post the information. But we all are aware of what the law says. The question at hand is, the boat I saw is over the allowed footage and was not on the lake before the law. My big boat has been gone, and was grandfathered in, it is just interesting, just what keeps sliping in under the radar, I guess the next thing someone will come up with is that the overall footage of the boat in question is not over the limit are it is on some kind of special research study for Sea Ray. I really do not care, but I bet you, it has meet somebody's criteria to be floating.

Even measured politically connected go fast catamaran style boats at the mid-point between sponsons to let it be grandfathered. Measuring in such a fashion is just plain stupid.

This "law " is simply unconstitutional! un american.Im currently building a 40 ft.eletric powered pontoon out of recycled matierals recovered from the lake.It will be granfathered in because the matierials where on the lake before the law.I will be chartering from area retirement homes and offering pick up service at the more prestiegous locations around the lake for day cruises at a fee of 200 per day. That will include huorderves and all you can drink.these will be sunrise cruise times, the boat will be capable of 80 m.p.h as we will need to get off the water before 4 to get every one home safe and not disturb your afternoon activities!

Cats are measured in the same manner as all other boats.  From the transom to the very front of the boat.

What is your LOA when measured from your transom to your very front?

I have been out of retail for a few decades fortunately, but cannot imagine placing orders for stock six years out, nor can I see a supplier accepting those orders...  Heck, even in manufacturing, our forecasts rarely looked past eighteen months.  I guess it comes back to the same thing - when you help write a law that is initiated for the sole purpose of helping your business; you have a BIG advantage.

Just repeating what I heard from a very reliable source.  I agree with your comment on how the boat is supposed to be measured, but this individual was approved by the MPs who measured the boat from centerline of stern to centerline of bow, which was several feet back from the bow of the sponsons.  By measuring this way, the boat was under the 30'11".

I read Capt Brooks comment which seemed clear.  NautiqueFrk, why don't you call him and provide the info you have on the Sea Ray 37', and let's see where it goes.

I don't know of a cat on the lake that measures over 30'6", and that's by honest measurements. Who's boat do you speak of?

I really do not care either way, but it is just interesting to see how things get twisted around. The sad thing about it is, a simple question never got answered it just got avoided.

Let me give everyone their "simple" answer since this is a popular subject.  The boat in question is the new Sea Ray 370 Venture (Not Sundancer).  If you are familiar with this boat you would know that this is a dual outboard propelled cruiser.  Capt. Brooks' response is right on the mark and verbatim with the law.  Due to the Venture's design, and by Capt. Brooks' definition this boat is 30' once you subtract the swim platform and outboard engine lengths.  This was verified by the dealer and state conservation office prior to delivery and launch.

I know all about the boat as well. And by the way the question, was not addressed to you, it was to Captain Brooks.
