I am looking for some advice on putting in a watering system for my grass/flower beds at the lake. I want to build the system myself and pump the H2O out of LM.

Do any of you have one of these systems at your lake house and would you be able to provide any recommendations or Gotchas?

I would like to know the size of the PVC pipes you should use (1" or 2 1/2") and also the size of the pump (3/4 or 1 1/2 or more)?

We have 150' of lake front which forms a Pie shaped wedge (on a point). The total land mass of our little country is approximately 3/4 acres.

Any recommendations ?

It's pretty much the same as putting in a sprinkler system on a city water line, except you'll use a continuous duty irrigation pump--available at Home Depot or Lowes. I used a 1 1/2 HP pump from HD, but I've go a high elevation lift to contend with. A standard timer (Rain Bird, etc) will work with multi-zones if needed. You'll need a solenoid switch to turn on the pump with the timer. I dropped the water feed line from my dock, about 3 feet off the bottom-you'll need a strainer/one-way valve at the end of the pickup line. Pump instructions will tell you what size pipe to use for pickup. Don't reduce your line below one inch with a continuous duty pump or you'll stand a chance of burning up the pump.

I'm sure many on the forum have experience putting in irrigation systems.

I am now convinced that spring is almost here.....I just noticed today that the day is ever-so-slightly longer and Pikeski is thinking about a sprinkler system! I'm not the expert , but have done my own several times over the years, so free advice is worth just that.......I do have a system that pulls out of the lake, BUT...I built on a lot with a slope...it is a 40+ foot rise from the pump at the sea wall to the top of my lot plus a straight line distance of about 150+ feet from the pump to the front most part of the lot at the street. So....you would not want to size your system based on these numbers unless they are the same at your place. However.......things you need to know( you probably already know this) so as to reverse engineer your pipe size, pump size etc, are: total GPM your system needs to provide, number of zones and type of heads you will use, and amount of rise if you have one. Highly recommend you have different zones for your turf, as for your flower beds and /or shrubs, because they generally will take different amounts over the seasons. And last but not least.......even if you have to sell one of your PWCs......put in the auto control system! Now..... you will have to decide what is bogus and what is not. BTW.....Osms was hiring himself out recently to supervise these kind of jobs.... but I think Jlazc has had problems getting a pass for him out of the half way house. : -}

Sure I forgot something, but this should get you started.

·Brass foot valve with screen placed 2' to 3' above the lake floor on a 45 degree angle
·1 1/2” Sch 40 from foot valve to pump
·Pump size of 1 to 1 ½ HP – Call Nelson Electric in Alex City. HP dependent on slope and distance from pump to foot valve. Had issues with my slope/distance so had to go up to a 1 ½ HP. My elevation slope from foot valve to pump is about 40’ and the foot valve is about 70’away from the pump. Then pump has to pump up hill about another 40’ of elevation to street level, then about another 300+’ to the furthest sprinkler head.. Most people should be able to get away with a 1 HP pump. For reference purposes my irrigation system covers about 1 ¼ acres, has 12 stations and about 100 heads.
·Pump Start Relay Switch (Solenoid switch)– Used to turn on/off pump automatically when controller box turns on. Again Nelson Electric in Alex City. Used a Hunter brand.
·Controller Box – Go with Toro. Would suggest no more than about 6 to 7 heads per station for the lawn heads and no more than 10 heads for shrub heads. TIS-612 - Outdoor Mount. I am using 8 gallon per minute lawn nozzles in my heads.
·Rain Gauge Sensor – Toro TWRS - Wireless Rain Sensor
·¾” Sch 40 PVC for sprinkler lines produces around 8 gallons per minute.
·Valves and Valve Boxes – Again Toro 250/260 Series
·Shrub and Lawn Heads – Toro of course – Super 800 Series
·Make sure to put lawn and shrub heads on separate stations/valves.
·Funny Pipe – But I would use the direct connect PVC fittings where ever possible. Just glue to PVC pipe and drill hole in pipe and screw in the head. Therefore, funny pipe not required, saves a lot of time.
·Put controller box on a surge protector. Over the years I have burned up a couple till I installed a surge protector.
·You will have to run an electrical line to Pump Start Relay from Breaker Box and another electrical line from the Controller to the pump start relay.
·Then an electrical line from pump start relay to the Pump, Heavier gauge the better here. Had to run mine 100’ or so.
·Bury all lines a minimum of 12" to be below the freeze line. This is more than enough for Alabama winters.

Hope this helps.

Dern Dog, you guys are the best. Sounds like you should all start your own irrigation company.

I think this information will get me on my way. Thanks for the help!

After you finish your system you will understand why we are not in the business.
