Pay the fine? Go to court? Just advice. I'm guilty, have learned my lesson, and would like to minimize my loses!

If this is your first ticket in years, go to court and they may send you to one night session on driving. Check to see if it is offered.

First ticket ever - and I've been driving 45 years.......if one goes to court, are there points on the license and an insurance increase?

You do get points but the insurance usually isn't affected with just one violation. The insurance company usually doesn't know until you file a claim. Pay the fine and/or ask about the expungement program. Either way get it over with.

So, how do I know about the one night session on driving or the expungement program? (New experience for me - duh?)

I received a ticket in the mail. It says I can either pay it now or go to court at a given date. Sounds to me like you are suggesting I go to court. Do I get to speak and "plead my case"?

Not being a lawyer I don't know all the proper procedures involved. My ticket was in another state that allowed expungement but I also had to pay the fine. You could probably go to the courthouse and they could tell you if that type of program exists. It wouldn't hurt to find out. If not I would pay the fine and forget court and in the future behave.

OK, here is my great advice
Look up the local DA in the county, Call him/her & explain your ticket, Usually they have a good relationship with the judge & can give you the best route to take I have done this in Camp Hill with good results

suggestion doesn't work, I would appearing for the court date, with an attorney. You will likely still have to pay the fine (and the attorney fee), but the ticket won't go on your record. As someone else said, most of the time, those things don't come back to bite you on the backside until you either file for new insurance (buy another car) or change carriers. Then it can "rate" your premiums for a year or more. If you have an attorney friend who will accompany you to court without charging a big fee, more the better. From what I have seen, going to court alone just to plead guilty will not accomplish anything other than a long wait and eventual payment of the fine you could have just mailed in. Or, if you plead "not guilty" they will set a trial date when you would return to plead your case. Other alternative: mail a check.

Thank you! You gave me some detail I was looking for. I don't have an attorney friend but will hire an attorney. I wanted to go to court to try to keep my insurance the same, but I am guilty so a "not guilty" plea won't work. I was hoping for a "no contest" or something. I know I have to pay the fine (ouch) but, as I said, would like to keep our insurance rates the same. Do you know about driving school? Is it offered in lieu of points, etc?
|
I would just pay the fine; It should make no difference in rates if you are not a repeat and regular offender...... and you won't have to pay an Attorney or spend a day in court. I get a ticket every 3-5 years, and it has never caused my rates to go up (and my rates are very good)....I just pay when I know I am guilty.
