You being a hydrologist may be able to clear up some issues regarding the current drought situation. I know you don't work in this area but may have access to data that we don't have or are not familiar with, and then again may just know the answer to my main question.

How often are the rivers, creeks and streams actually measured?

There has been a comment on here several times that APCO is using outdated 'flow charts' for the watershed of our lake ( I personally know better, but it will carry more weight coming from you than me). It has just been in the last few days, in fact, where I read that the current flow of Tallapoosa River is down to 79cfs as measured at Horseshoe Bend and the outflow is set by FERC at 2400cfs. I can't remember where I read it though.

Any way I thought maybe with your expertise you may be able to shed some light on the subject for some that insist APCO is mismanaging the lake. I hope that when your vacation is over you continue to frequent the forum. It will be nice to have someone with expertise to add to our discussions.

I also hope that your baby is doing well!!!! It is a shame that she wont be able to enjoy the water anymore while she is here.

The site at the link claims to be realtime streamflows.

WOW!! They are showing 1002cfs difference between Wadley and Horshoe Bend. I don't know how that can be unless that reading was while Harris was generating. Maybe there are some major tributaries that come into play between the two sites. I would have to look at a map to know. I am not sure where the Little T and T run together.

Check out the graph for Horseshoe Bend; the way the levels rise and fall like clockwork most days, it seems hard to believe that it's random. I'm guessing that you logged into the site during a release.

T and Little T join just north of Lake Wedowee/Harris Reservoir-Dam.

Mythbuuster's link to our (USGS) site is as accurate as it gets and is the basis that APCO, COE, NOAA, NWS, TVA..ALL use as their base data. The USGS is a strictly data collection arm of the Fed gov't with no regulatory authority. The dta collected is as unbiased as it gets and is generally within +/- 10% and is measured every 6-8 weeks for (Tallapossa case) 88 years. The +/- 10%..usually its much closer is only because of shifting bed material or instrument calibaration. A colleague of mine worked in the Tuscalossa office for many years and has contacts there. They are definately up to date w/ equipment and streamflow rating. The use state of the art acoustic dopplers to measure streamflow and channel geometry as well as computer driven models for discharge data.
IOW...it don't get any better anywhere in the world or scientific communtiy.

We in South Carolina experinced a drought similar to this 2 years ago. I know its hard to believe at times..but your government is probably doing all they can..for all concerned within the standars that they must operate under. Hey..I ain't complaining too bad and I'm here for a once in a lefteime vaca..

btw...had a great day on the water today.Dog is on the mend and this 47

Take your Wife to the Yellow Hammer in Waverly in celebration of her birthday. It will be well worth it for both of you and put you in good grace for the entire year until her next birthday.

To think that you are going to be able to golf tomorrow after wakeboarding today.....lol.

Thanks for the input. Now maybe somebody that keeps screaming about outdated flow charts will STFU. I, for one, am grateful for your input and hope that you continue to visit the forum after your vacation. I have tried to convince some folks that a lot more is in play besides our beloved lake. The water systems are managed on a state and reginal basis with the most up to date data available. Some folks just take it personal since the water is low and seem to think they know more than APCO about how to manage the lakes. Not me, I am just a pawn in the game of life, but I know how the lakes are managed.

The Little Tallapoosa and the big one run together in Lake Harris (Wedowee). 33 deg 18.84 and 85 deg 34.63 apx., or just north of the Hwy 48 bridge between Wedowee and Lineville.

"What an optimist......", echo LTL on the desire to play golf after the wakeboarding!!!!!!! This 61 year old f@rt just had the great experience of showing up his 30's daughter and son-in-law on the ski's last weekend and I had trouble picking up the fork for a meal!! Which course will you play, if it is Stillwaters let us know your opinion.
