After months of searching, my dad finally found the deal he was looking for on a pontoon boat. It is rigged with an Evinrude E-Tech motor. I'm not sure it would have been our first choice (all things being equal), but it does come with a great warranty. If it lives up to the companies hype, I'm sure he will be quite happy. There have been several discussions on E-Tech vs 4 stroke over the last few years, but I don't remember many folks actually using the motor.....it looks like we will be a Lake Martin test case, and I certainly hope we can give it a great rating in a few years.

I sent you a personal message. There is a lot of ignorance on the new 2 strokes. They are not the same as the old two stokes. There is a new technology.

You do not even mix the oil with the gas with the new ones. It has a separate tank for the oil, and the oil to gas mixture is almost below imagination. One gallon of oil will surfice with almost a 100 hours of use. I could be corrected on this statement.

My new Mercury Optimax 250 from Mercury racing motors has the sound of a Harley or an old sweet sounding Vette 283.

I know you are familiar with the sound of a Harley.

Yep, I always loved the sound of my Harley motorcycles, but I don't think my neighbors did (LOL). It's about time to get another one!

In this case we were going for quiet, and the E-Tech seems to live up to that ideal.

Yes, My Mercury Optimax 250 has a sweet low rumble to it. It is like a soft growl waiting to happen.

You are right, it maybe slighly louder than a 4 stroke, but not by much.

I always idle until I get to the big water. This is the way it should be.

I respect my neighbors.

My hearing is shot, and I am not one to judge.

Did a lot of research about 3 years ago regarding the E-tech vs. other 4 strokes and what I gathered is as follows:

- Almost as quit as a 4 stroke
- Better hole shot than a 4 stroke
- Good on emissions, not the old 2 stroke smell
- No break in period
- Fuel economy not quit as good as a 4 stroke, but close
- First service at 300 hours, that says a lot right there in my opinion.
- Great warranty

Basically, after reading some of the testimonials on other forums I was sort of leaning toward an E-Tech or a Suzuki 4 stroke. The major issue I had with both was the limited service around the lake.

But if you ever have an issue with the E-Tech and Reed cannot fix it there is a gentleman down in Tallassee (have his name and number somewhere) that is the whos who of both the E-Tech and Suzukis.

I would be interested as I am sure would others on your thoughts regarding the E-Tech after a year or so and heck even after your Dads first month of operation. I am guessing he will be very happy.

Been running an '03 model 90 hp E-tech on a 22' pontoon since '06 when I bought it used. In addition to the low oil consumption- therefore low smoke emission- the best part of the deal is the need for maintenance only every three years! Mitchell Marine has the computer software needed to do the maintenance........but that's not too much of a hassle every three years. Don't have recent experience with another type engine, but am pleased with the Evinrude.........could there be a name in that?!

Thanks Rude. He got the boat today, and I'm very impressed. The motor is strong and quiet. The Manitou Legacy (with the SHP package) handles almost as good as my direct drive ski boat! The lake was very choppy today, and the ride was incredibly smooth....It makes my old Harris look like a dinosaur.

Good lookin boat and I like the sound of the motor - I thought it was a 2 stoke when I first saw it. Like others I have heard good things about them.
