Subject:   STYROFOAM - BANNED? BURN?
Date:   8/13/2010 2:07:43 PM

I have a couple questions... was the use of Styrofoam banned on the lake? ie- used under docks for flotation etc.

AND... isn't burning it illegal? I know burning it releases MANY toxins and is NOT recommended as it actually only partially burns while the rest escapes in a deadly plume of carcinogens. My neighbor retrieved a large (2' x 2' x 3') piece of styrofoam from the lake and proceeded to burn it along with everything else in his woodpile. My wife and I were enjoying the dock and a swim at the time and were shocked that anyone would be foolish enough to burn this stuff. The pungent aroma alone would drive most folks nuts let alone knowing what's in it. Obviously our neighbor was unaware of any problem associated with burning it as their 3 yr old grandson was laughing and playing right along side them as they watched it 'burn' for several hours.I have attempted to communicate on some issue with my neighbor this past year which involved topics more concerning than just sports or weather and was met with a less than friendly attitude and rather than start anything, I opted to print out some info on the subject and put it in their mailbox. I also called the sheriff's office and asked about burning it and they put me on hold for about 10 minutes to find out. They could not answer my question but said they would 'look in to it'. I don't think that happened. THEN... three weeks later, my neighbor fired up the pit and put yet more styrofoam on their burn pile. I assume this is because A) they think the info they received is bogus or B) this is an attempt to be belligerent about burning this substance since they know someone nearby was bothered by it.

So... answers, opinions and suggestions are welcome.

There's lots of this around. There are people around the lake in subdivisions that like to act like they live on 100 acre. Ignorance? Beligerence? Who knows. A quick conversation will tell you what you need to know to discern. I'd like to see the towns around the lake ban burning in subdivisions. We have FREE weekly pickup of trash & litter at the curb in Dadeville but that doesn't stop them from burning trash and who knows what. Go figure. I think the EPA has regulations but would it apply at the county level? Call 'em up.

Like it or not, there are extremes on every subject. And one thing that irritates the extremes are the moderates. I'd say that your neighbor is the moderate. He isn't a tree hugger and isn't buying into the theory of CFC's eating holes into the ozone layer. There are many who do, and many who don't.

apparently there isn't many folks who know if it is legal or not ( including the sherriff's dept. and yourself). Don't judge him too harshly on his idiosyncracy. (My grand-Dad went bonkers one year because I planted a garden before Good Friday. Go figure, the garden fared well and was as productive if not more productive than his). Grand-Dad thought that it was "...the law of the land", when it truth, it existed only in his mind.

Sure burning the stuff does produce toxins and can have health concerns. But so can swimming, driving cars, hunting, and drinking alcohol.

Fair enough.... I guess.

Comparing swimming with having to tolerate the burning of toxic materials is a little off base in my opinion but it sheds light on the mentality towards the subject. I find it interesting how many will chime in on the watercraft and noise on the lake but the lack of reponse on this topic based on the aforementioned topics is kind of surprising to me.

I hope y'all don't ever burn styrofoam. Especially in the volume he did that day... if you do, you will quickly understand where I am coming from. Whether you are aware of it's properties and effect on pollution your common sense will tell you that there is something wrong the minute it hits your nostrils.

I remember when I ran a Chevron for years and had to warn people not too let their children who's height put them right at gas cap level, not to let their kids breath much of that vapor as it is known to cause cancer. One woman's response: "But he loves the smell!"

Breath deep, little Johnny. Breath deep.

Having said all that, I too am annoyed by others whose actions are carried out without the consideration of what effects it might have on the community as a whole. I too, get a little ticked when others crank up their noise levels to where neighbors are forced to listen to the racket. Boaters who drive as though the lake were all to themselves who create havock to those swimming near piers amd to other boaters who are out to enjoy the ride. People who litte the natural beauty of the land. Irresponsible pet owners who neither look after their animals welfare and allow them to be a nusience to others property.

The matter probably comes down to how we were raised and the lessons of being good neighbors to everyone. Some were taught well, some were never taught. I remember at the age of 6 being taught to memorize the "Golden Rule", ...do unto others as you would have them do onto you. I did not fully understand the true meaning it the concept back then but the years have made me apply it as a way of life.

A few years later you realize that the golden rule is really: HE WHO HAS THE GOLD MAKES THE RULES!!

Just nail a piece to the side of your neighbors house. See if he lights that one up, then your problem is solved.
