Who determines where hazard/shoal marker buoys are placed? There's a large sandbar off of an island in Hog Pen Slough (straight across from Pleasure Point Marina) that's only about 2 foot deep now, maybe 4 foot at full pool. It's not really coming off a point like many of the sandbars you see, and probably sticks out a couple hundred yards.

Marine Police determine buoy locations and then LMRA places and maintains the markers.

The Marine Police have a form that you can request that will need to be filled out and a diagram / drawing needs to be submitted with it. Then they check it out to see if it is needed.

Marine Police. But from here on out it's best to rely on local knowledge. I pay attention in the winter and remember in the summer.

Get a depth finder, use it, and learn the lake. A topo map can help, too.

Thanks for your concern, but I have a depth finder, a chart of the lake, and have logged a couple of hundred hours on the lake over the last 4 years. I give all of the hazards/sandbars a wide berth. A lot of these hazards are well marked, even though they are much deeper than the sandbar in Hog Pen Slough. People go flying over that sandbar at speed, usually on a jetski or on a boat towing tuberiders. It's a lower unit tear out waiting to happen....or worse.

Mere babe in the woods with only 200 hours on the lake. BTW, thanks for the thanks for my concern. There are a he!! of a lot more concerns on the lake than an unmarked place like that. Most people wouldn't pay attention to a buoy anyway. They are always running across the mud flat with all of the signs and buoys in Blue Creek.

Yeah, that's 200 hours engine time. Definitely a few more than that on and around the lake. Ahh, the perils of youth.
