Subject:   Island campers are slobs!
Date:   9/14/2010 11:58:56 AM

OK, not ALL island campers are slobs; I just wanted this post to get some attention. But SOME island campers are unbelievably trashy, and now that summer is over there are unbelievable piles of trash to prove it. So far the worst I have seen is Dixie Island (or Dixies, depending on which map you use; it's the island closest to the Dixie Sailing Club.) It looks like someone squatted there all summer, and when they left they left behind their tent-- it has a hole in it, so I guess it's considered trash-- three ripped folding chairs, a grill that they tossed into the lake, and hundreds of beer cans. And, a few dozen yards away from the campsite, there is a small landfill that contains what looks like a few thousand cans and bottles, plus other trash.

And that's just ONE campsite on ONE island. It won't surprise me to learn that there are other sites, other islands, that are even worse.

I'm not looking to get island camping banned; I've done it too often myself to say that it shouldn't be allowed. But if I see too many more dump sites like that one-- or if I think too hard about "if this is what they are throwing on the ground, what are they throwing in the lake?"-- then I might have to change my mind.

They probably moved from the island to under an overpass in Tuscaloosa for football season!!!

Pontoon, are they living with you and your family under that overpass?

Renew our Rivers is scheduled for Oct. 8-9. I believe the Lake Martin Resource Association is still identifying areas that are littered. Contact John Thompson at lmra@lmra.info

Actually, I think it already is illegal. All the Russell Lands areas are marked with signs and Alabama Power used to send around an enforcement person requesting overnight campers move off of their islands. I agree that too many people don't respect the Lake's environment, nor do they seem to accept any personal responsibility for  cleaning up what they mess up.

Hey, don't stop the camping. A lot more good comes from it on a family level than most will ever know. A lot of the campers can't afford to own a place on the lake, nor rent a place. (I know, I've been there.) But these vandals need to be held accountable for littering and establishing permanent camps. Heck, nail them. If the place is screwed up while they are there, it's ticket time. They may not have been the people littering, but they can dam sure clean up when they choose a spot. And that's before they set up a tent. Have some guidelines and hold them to 'em. We don't want the lake to turn into Atlanta Athletic Club nor do we want trash scattered around.

Such a simple solution..  I learned it 5 decades ago from my grandfather..  "when you go out on the lake, camp, or just walk in the woods, bring your trash,  + 1 can or bottle back with you'  Difficult concept, but it even works at Walmart..  Instead of walking past a grocery cart someone left in the parking lot, carry it back with you to the store..

My two Eagle Scouts (and myself, wife and daughter) support that philosophy 100%.....unfortunately, not everyone is on board. I don't know an easy solution for curing ignorance.

Slightly off the subject, but in Italy they have solved the problem of a parking lot being littered with grocery carts. The carts are chained together one by one, using a unique release device.  Patrons "rent" the cart for one Euro by placing a Euro coin in the release device, which releases that cart from the stack.  The Euro coin is trapped in the device until such time that the cart is re-chained to the rest, where it is released and the customer gets it back.

Great concept, but the problem is that no merchant in the US is going to be brave and bold enough to be the first to tell us lazy-*** Americans that we have to "pay" to get a cart.

And unfortunately there are enough who would go next door where some poor soul spends half his working time unproductively rounding up and returning the carts so they can just be scattered again.

BTW, how are the Huskers looking this year?

Depends on what's in it at the current microsecond....Italy, Charleston, DC -- they don't matter.  The cabin at the lake---that hurts.

Good luck against the t-sippers and the none-ers this year.  I'm going to go watch my Razorbacks whup up on po ole Jawja this Saturday...as the guest of some old AF friends who grew up in and graduated from Athens...

Perhaps you've never shopped at Aldi grocery stores (located in Alabama in Birmingham, Bessemer, Decatur, and Florence). The carts are linked together (reminds me of the airport carts that hold luggage) and you put a quarter in the slot. The quarter is returned when the cart is put back in the area that they go. It's great because all the carts are where they belong!

You are right, I have never shopped there and I applaud Aldi.  Thanks for sharing the ray of hope.  Although these days a Euro is about five times the value of a quarter, it is still amazing the difference it makes.  Shucks, if folks pass on getting their quarter back some enterprising kid will realize that he can get a buck for every four he scarfs up and puts back where they belong!

Recently, I was walking to the entrance of a WalMart and a car was parked at the entrance. As I approached, a back seat passenger threw a fastfood bag with trash out the window. I picked it up, handed to the passenger and said "I think you dropped this by mistake". The driver apologized and screamed at the passenger to stop throwing trash out the window.

Good job...

I've often wondered how you change someone's attitude so that they begin to care...about themselves, the things around them, and others.

That is my chair... I would know it anywhere. Someone took it when I went to the restroom at the Auburn game last year.

I have mixed emotions on Ark v Aub....I graduated from Fayetteville and my son attended Auburn.  And since anyone choosing to live in Alabama (when I was on active duty assigned to Gunter we had a pass) one must choose between Auburn and "The University" (groan), so we are Auburn fans.  I sorta feel like yelling War Pig Sooie.

Now when I watch Arkansas take apart Georgia this Saturday, I'll definitely be calling the hogs all day..:>)

MrHodja....I understand they have a pretty big pit with lots of hot coals waiting for you big ole hogs. From what I can gather, there's going to be a great big barbecue in Athens come Satday night. GOOOOOOOO Dawgs!!!!!

I took these pics on my second visit to the island, a couple of days after the one I posted about. In the time between the two visits someone had done some cleaning. There is a picture of the inside of the tent with several bags of trash inside; imagine most of that trash scattered around he area to get an idea of what I saw the first time.

I have no way of knowing but I have a feeling that the people who trashed the island and the people who tried to clean it up are NOT the same.

They may have been an Alabama fan but I hope they change. Reguardless of what team they support, it is obvious they are not a true Lake Martin fan. What a shame for someone to care that little about the lake. ROLL TIDE

Hogs feasted on gaegogi.....two pretty evenly matched teams, though, with both seemingly scoring almost at will in Q4.  I was a guest of some old friends who are died in the wool Dog fans so I was pretty quiet....until that last touchdown.  Thought I might be the one on the grill...:>)

Peace, and good luck for the rest of the season.
