What do you plant in your yard for summer? Sun vs shade? If you are in the between sun/shade what do you find to be the best plants? We cut several trees during the winter months and now have shade/sun. Would like to have suggestions from the great and almighty forum!

We have had a place on Lake Martin for 10 years now. Sun plants/flowers: Mexican Heather is nice for borders or at edge of rock garden or in a cluster. The usual annuals do really well, like marigolds, zinnias (great to cut for a vase),periwinkles (or vincas). Of course, roses, encore azaleas, gardenias and confederate jasmine. We like Indian Hawthorne for a nice perennial shrub, grows quickly, needs no attention, drought tolerant. Has small white or pink flowers in spring to summer, then berries in fall to winter. (BUT the deer LOVE them, so put a deterrent nearby or plant in fenced area.) Purslane does well in a pot or in the ground, spreads and has nice colors, requires almost no attention whatsoever, very drought tolerant. In the shade, hostas do nicely in a pot on the porch. Impatiens will bloom profusely in a shaded area. Ferns, whatever varieties are native to this area, will do great in shade.

Ah yes. Spring planting in the South. Or as little one used to say, "Are we going to plant more deer appetizers this year?"
I have taken to adding rosemary to the gardens.  Can't say they are totally deer repelant. Seems to actually work pretty well.  Sure smells great when watered or rained on.  And the dried stems make good skewers for grilling.

You do not mention how you are going to water your plants. Put a LOT of thought into that before you start digging in plants.Late July and August at LM can be brutal with heat and no rain, sometimes. Unless you are at the Lake fullTime, while you are not there the annuals will suffer, even some of the newly planted permanent stuff.
Full sun? Barberry shrubs, small, brilliant yellow or burgundy. Tough plant. Banana plants/trees. Knockout roses.
Shade/Partial Sun? Ferns or Begonias.
Deer love them all, so be prepared to find them shredded.

Deer seem to leave the Azaleas and Gardenias alone.  Impatiens also seem to be deer proof, but they need shade and watering.  I am a Petunia fan, but unfortunately, so are the rats with antlers.  There was another annual that was self sustaining on our waterfront for several years, but I can't remember the name, but I think Prince was in there somewhere(and no, they weren't purple, but they were close).
