Does anyone out there have a schedule for the train that runs across the trestle and into / out of Alexander City.  We seem to keep missing it and it would be nice to have an estimated time for when they run...

Thanks for any info you can provide!

If you have a 'police' scanner, you might want to set one of the stored channels to 161.115 MHz. That is the frequency that Norfolk Southern (the line that runs through Alex City and Dadeville) uses on their "EOT" (end of train) transmitters. The EOT transmitter is fairly low power, but you should be able to determine when a train is in close proximity by listening for a while. RadioActive

As you have found, freight trains do not have regular schedules, although they may be pretty routine. As well as my earlier suggestion to listen for the EOT, you may also want to listen to some of these, especially the dispatcher to train and road channels. Mack,

Great question in this day and age... I just realized I never mentioned the reasoning... I have a 5 year old son (named AJ... hence the forum moniker)  that is enamored with trains.  Everytime we go out on the lake, he wants to go under the train tracks and is always asking if I think a train is coming.  Unfortunately, I have no clue! :-)  We happened to be on the lake last Saturday and saw one come by about 1:30 p.m. CDT and it made me think that someone out there may have an idea as to what the schedule is for the trains coming over the trestle.  I don't know why I didn't think of the scanner idea that was mentioned earlier in the post!  What a great idea.

Anyways, suffice it to say that I appreciate the feedback from the forum, as always, and look to see if I can catch up with a few of the folks / departments mentioned in the thread to see about a schedule.

Thanks again for all the info.

Some time when it cools down, you should stop by my shop and I will take you guys out to the Hachet Creek RR bridge. At one time it was the highest trestle this side of the Rockeys. There are few things that have taken my breath when I saw them for the first time.. This is one of them.

Here is a excerpt from a story about it.
It played a vital role in the supply of munitions during WWII.

One factor which contributed greatly to the long time isolation of many of the communities along Hatchet Creek was simply the difficulty of bridging the creek. For many years the Central of Georgia railroad terminated at Goodwater largely because of the engineering problems involved in extending the line across the creek. When the present trestle was built around 1910 it was the highest railroad bridge in the United States. The trestle was considered of such strategic importance during World War II that sentries were posted on both banks of the creek 24 hours a day to guard against German saboteurs. The trestle is still impressive today, particularly when you come floating around a quiet bend in the creek and suddenly, with a roar, there appears a fright train hurdling high above the tops of the trees.

NCII, I took a look out on the web for any info on the trestle and was amazed to see all the videos that are out there.  Thanks for letting me know about the trestle there... it would be a fun trip to go up and see the train coming across that beast.  Wow... quite a site.

No problem I live about 4 miles from it. First saw it when I was 13,,, 40 now... and It was the only time in my life I had vertigo.

You think "what the heck is this monolithic structure doing out here in the middle of no where." I can show you the old foundations of the howliteziers (SP) that were mounted and the guard shacks. You know most of the powder used during WWII came out of Childersburg. This rail line was the trip 80% of all the DuPont powder took to the east coast and the European war effort. Funney thing,,,,Most people don't know it's there. AND IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE THINGS YOU WILL EVER SEE!
